President Donald Trump taking part in the first ever defense and innovation summit in Carlisle, Cumberland County, but his appearance today was met with some pushback. We’ll have extensive team coverage on what the president had to say in just *** bit as he just walked off that stage. But first, it’s *** dangerously hot day out there across the Susquehanna Valley. High heat, humidity. And even *** big dose of wildfire smoke coming down, making things uncomfortable for folks outdoors today. Welcome to News 8 at 5, everyone. We’ve been seeing some pretty big impacts from those conditions, from Amtrak needing to slow down those trains to an air quality alert that’s being issued for tomorrow because of those wildfires up to our north. It could be dangerous for those who are at risk. So let’s bring in meteorologist Ethan Houston with *** first check of our storm team forecast, Smokey. That’s right, it’s *** 12 punch. First it’s the heat that’s outside right now, but then the air quality will drop later tonight on into Thursday. So we’ve got the peak of the heat wave today now until sunset. Feels like temperatures could still be near or right above 100 degrees. Then tomorrow we will see that wildfire smoke concentration increase, leading to air quality impacts for Thursday and also on into Friday. Finally we’ll see some improvements in terms of the air quality in storms. Chances going on into the weekend and temperatures will continue to drop, but let’s talk about the heat 1st. 97 right now in Harrisburg. Remember, the record high today is 99. We were close to that earlier this afternoon, but it feels hotter. Feels like it’s 101 in Harrisburg. Feels like it’s 102 right now in Lancaster. So going through the next 12 hours, still feeling like it’s near 100 degrees through sunset. Lows tonight will be in the mid-70s. We’re also keeping an eye on this cluster of thunderstorms to our northeast. It may grade. Parts of Dauphin County, Levinon County, Berks, and towards Chester and Schuki County, but chances of that are still quite low. That’s something we’re monitoring. But notice we’ve got the air quality alert, *** code red for tomorrow. That means the air quality will be unhealthy for everyone, not just sensitive, the elderly or children could have some issues coughing with stinging eyes and breathing difficulties. So you want to limit exercise and outdoor activities through the day tomorrow. Temperatures will top off in the lower 90s because. Of that poor air quality could see that haze on the horizon may look like it’s cloudy outside. And then on Friday, still an impact day as we have *** code orange. That means air quality is anticipated to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Finally, the temperatures will drop as the shower and thunderstorm chances increase for our Saturday. I’ll talk about that more coming up in *** few minutes. All right, Ethan, thank you. Let’s head back to Carlisle now at the US Army War College. President Donald Trump just left *** roundtable discussion alongside members of his administration. An American defense leader speaking on how the Commonwealth is contributing to safety here at home. That roundtable lasting about an hour and *** half. His visit to our area is part of the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit. Just in the last hour, Trump announced that nearly $10 billion in new defense-related investment. is coming to Pennsylvania, which he said would create more than 4000 jobs. He framed it as *** major economic and manufacturing win for the state, especially in shipbuilding, submarines, trucks, weapons, and other defense industries. Also participating in this roundtable, Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Pennsylvania will play *** key role in building the arsenal of freedom to defend our nation. In the modern world we have things happening in this state. I think really people don’t know what’s happening in Pennsylvania. People aren’t really, uh, literally they’re not able to even fathom what’s going on. I’m just saying back there I thought I was very well aware of it and then I’m meeting people, very well known people, and they’re saying what they’re doing here. Uh, we got to get the word out *** little bit because this is very much of *** miracle, very much of *** miracle, highly respected people. The talent and innovation in this room will keep America safe for many years to come. Impeach, convict, remove every single one of them. That’s all I have to say. And protesters spent part of the day protesting the president’s visit to Carlisle. Some are against the president’s actions when it comes to the war in Iran. Others are calling for an end of the administration’s current immigration practices. According to *** just released Quinnipiac University poll, 39% of voters approve of the way the president is handling his job, while 58% disapprove. That’s down compared to *** February poll. When 40% approved and 55% disapproved of the job the president’s doing. This same event also featured *** bit of *** bipartisan interest as Governor Josh Shapiro spoke earlier today. And Thespian Mass continues our coverage with what his message was. That’s me. That’s right. So this Pennsylvania Defense Innovation Summit has been *** chance to showcase some of the technology and hear from leaders in *** number of fields about advances in waging war. and defending the country, the event showed *** moment of bipartisan ties when Governor Josh Shapiro, Democrat and Republican US Senator Dave McCormick, took the stage together. Like you see right there. The pair talked about the role of Pennsylvania’s workforce in building warships at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia to how higher education can stoke innovation. The pair were asked what they think the biggest risk to national security is. We have to expand the definition of national security to include rare earth metals and uh and and power and energy and the things that are required. Uh, we have to make sure that workforce can meet the needs of this moment and we have to to integrate. I think isolation is *** risk if we do not rely on our allies to make 1 + 1 equal 3 when it comes to innovation. That gives China an advantage. So following that, Shapiro also took *** shot at the Trump administration, saying that isolating and pertly poking our eye or poking our finger in the eyes of our allies abroad is quote counterproductive to innovation. So the summit, by the way, is the first to ever be held at Carlisle’s Army War College and featured prominent business leaders from American companies like Lockheed Martin, JPMorgan Chase, and General Dynamics.
