Despite hazy skies and a Code Red Air Quality Advisory, live music continued Wednesday evening at Beach 1 as the UPMC Sunset Music Series welcomed visitors to Presque Isle State Park.<\/p>\n
People lined the shoreline for the free weekly concert, with many choosing to spend the evening enjoying live music along Lake Erie’s waterfront. Organizers with the Presque Isle Partnership said the event proceeded as planned while encouraging attendees to make the decision that was best for their own health.<\/p>\n
“We always have an ambulance here at our events just in case anything were to go wrong,” said Jon DeMarco, executive director of the Presque Isle Partnership. “Of course, today we know that there are some advisories regarding the air quality.”<\/p>\n
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a Code Red Air Quality Advisory for the region, indicating that air pollution levels could be unhealthy for everyone, especially those with respiratory conditions or other health concerns.<\/p>\n
DeMarco said the organization routinely has emergency medical personnel on site during its events and encouraged visitors to consider their own medical conditions before attending outdoor activities.<\/p>\n
“We really trust that people monitor that on their own and, of course, make judgment calls on whether to attend an outdoor event based on their own knowledge of their own medical conditions,” DeMarco said. “We just welcome folks to come out and enjoy the peninsula, but certainly take precautions based on your own medical history.”<\/p>\n
Even with the advisory in effect, many people gathered along the beach to enjoy the concert while supporting the Presque Isle Partnership, a nonprofit organization that helps fund preservation, improvement, and accessibility projects throughout Presque Isle State Park.<\/p>\n
“We also get a beautiful sunset, when the sky is not as hazy as it is,” DeMarco said. “People are always supportive of us. We’re just very grateful that we can continue on with our mission through the support of everybody you see here.”<\/p>\n
The UPMC Sunset Music Series continues every Wednesday evening throughout the summer at Beach 1. Proceeds from the events support the Presque Isle Partnership’s efforts to enhance, preserve and improve accessibility at Presque Isle State Park.<\/p>\n
