HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) \u2014 Senator John Fetterman’s fairly frequent opposition to major Democratic initiatives has harmed his standing in the party and upset the Pennsylvania voters who sent him to Congress fewer than four years ago.<\/p>\n
His consistent criticism of progressive stances and staunch support for Israel, which has continued waging war around the Middle East, have elicited gossip around Washington about the senator’s future as a Democrat. That speculation has reached his home state.<\/p>\n
Half of Pennsylvania’s registered voters want Fetterman to leave the party, according to recently released poll results. Quinnipiac University found last weekend that 52% of participants, including 57% of Democrats and 55% of Republicans, want him to change his affiliation.<\/p>\n
The senator, who first entered the Capitol in the second half of former President Joe Biden’s term, has become increasingly supportive <\/a>of causes championed by Republicans, like solidarity with Israel and the vilification of socialist views. He said last month, after a slew of Democratic socialist primary victories, that he would soon be joined in Congress by anti-Israel members of the “dirtbag left.<\/a>“<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s a wing of the party, without a doubt,” Fetterman told Fox News<\/a>. “But they\u2019re not Democrats, they\u2019re not socialists. Several of\u2014many of them … are an avowed communist.”<\/p>\n His animosity could grow if the party becomes entirely hostile toward Israel. The senator said in a Thursday interview with NBC News<\/a> that an anti-Israel platform would be a red line for him.<\/p>\n “Democrats, we\u2019ve always should support Israel. That\u2019s our special ally, you know?” Fetterman said. “In the only democracy in the entire region, that\u2019s Israel. So I\u2019m always proud to stand with Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n He could benefit from an independent or Republican affiliation as the second half of his term develops. Fetterman would likely face a strong Democratic primary challenger if he remains a member of his current party.<\/p>\n Former Representative Conor Lamb, who lost the Democratic nomination to Fetterman in 2022, is a potential 2028 candidate. He told The Washington Post<\/a> earlier this year that his issues with the senator began shortly after President Donald Trump took office, when Fetterman joined his Republican colleagues to confirm Pam Bondi as attorney general. Since then, Lamb said, Fetterman’s regular appearances on conservative media have added fuel to the fire.<\/p>\n \u201cI think beyond individual votes, it\u2019s just the constant going on Fox News to berate and demean other Democrats when Trump is the person in power,\u201d Lamb said. \u201cThe role of a senator is to hold someone like that accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n
