A Dunmore woman reached for a handgun during a traffic stop July 10 after being pulled over in the parking lot of a smoke shop on Main Street, according to a criminal complaint.<\/p>\n
At about 5 p.m., Dunmore police stopped Nakieta Lashire Stolze, 36, of Blakely Street, for driving with an expired registration.<\/p>\n
But when Officer Zakery Sawyer approached her from the passenger side, he spotted her right hand resting on a handgun in the glove compartment, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n
When Sawyer drew his sidearm and ordered Stolze away from the gun, she initially refused, police said.<\/p>\n
According to the complaint, she eventually moved away from the gun and put her hands up, but when Sawyer ordered her to put her hands on the wheel, she again refused to comply.<\/p>\n
Stolze said she would not comply with Sawyer\u2019s orders unless he approached her from the driver\u2019s side, rather than the passenger side.<\/p>\n
\u201cI explained why having her hand on a gun while on a traffic stop was a bad idea,\u201d Sawyer wrote in the complaint.<\/p>\n
When asked for her license, Stolze continued to argue but eventually handed it over.<\/p>\n
Officers determined her driver\u2019s license was valid but her gun permit had expired.<\/p>\n
Stolze allegedly refused to step out of the vehicle, even after officers ordered her out of the car several times.<\/p>\n
When she ultimately did get out of the vehicle, she refused to step away from the car and began arguing with officers.<\/p>\n
When officers attempted to put her in handcuffs, she pulled away and stated she was going to hurt them, police said.<\/p>\n
Officers were able to take Stolze into custody after bringing her to the ground, but she continued to resist as they attempted to put her in the patrol vehicle.<\/p>\n
Once placed in the vehicle, she kicked the door so hard that the cruiser swayed.<\/p>\n
Officers retrieved a Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun from the glove compartment. It contained a full magazine of 17 hollow-point bullets, but the chamber was empty.<\/p>\n
Police noted the weapon\u2019s serial number had been scratched off and was unreadable.<\/p>\n
Stolze\u2019s mother, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported home by police.<\/p>\n
Once at the police station, Stolze continued to resist, pulled away from officers and had to be forced into a holding cell.<\/p>\n
