A Bethlehem<\/a> man convicted of casting ballots in two states during the 2020 presidential election has been sentenced to probation.<\/p>\n

U.S. Attorney David Metcalf on Wednesday announced Matthew Laiss, 32, was sentenced to three years of probation, with the first six months to be served on home confinement. Laiss was also ordered to pay a $6,000 fine and a $200 special assessment, according to a news release from Metcalf’s office.<\/p>\n

A federal jury convicted Laiss in March<\/a> on one count of voting more than once in a federal election and one count of voter fraud. He had been indicted on the charges in September 2025.<\/p>\n

Laiss lived in Ottsville, Bucks County, from at least October 2012 until about August 2020, when he moved his primary residence to Frostproof, Florida. Prosecutors said he obtained a Florida driver’s license and registered to vote there after relocating.<\/p>\n

Despite the move, the Bucks County Board of Elections mailed a ballot for the November 2020 general election to Laiss’ former address in Ottsville, where his parents continued to live.<\/p>\n

Evidence presented at trial showed that Laiss completed and returned the Pennsylvania mail-in ballot on or about Oct. 31, 2020, casting votes for president and vice president. Prosecutors said Laiss then voted in person at a polling place in or around Frostproof, Florida, on Nov. 3, 2020, again casting ballots for president and vice president.<\/p>\n

His attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

The case was investigated by the FBI with assistance from the Pennsylvania Department of State. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Dubnoff prosecuted the case.<\/p>\n
