Pittston\u2019s revitalization has a new name.<\/p>\n
The mayor calls it \u201cMain Street Too.\u201d<\/p>\n
After years of downtown progress, the city\u2019s leadership is looking to branch out and develop the second phase of the city\u2019s renaissance that will stretch to the borders of other municipalities.<\/p>\n
The City of Pittston was recently awarded $500,000 in grant funding to redevelop a former lumber yard, just one of dozens of projects awarded locally through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.<\/p>\n
A developer plans to create a mixed-use restaurant and event space at the property on the 200 block of North Main Street.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project will have an impact. It will take an under-performing property and make it one that will produce taxes for the city, the county, the school district and the Commonwealth,\u201d Pittston Mayor Mike Lombardo said.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro agrees.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day, my Administration is focused on getting stuff done for the good people of Pennsylvania \u2014 and we\u2019re proud to support hundreds of projects across the Commonwealth that will create jobs, strengthen our economy, and deliver real results for our communities,\u201d Shapiro said in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n
Projects in Luzerne County include:<\/p>\n
\u2022 West Broad Street Development: $1 million to support interior fit-out and equipment installation for a commercial redevelopment project including HVAC, plumbing, and fire systems.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Blasi Printing: $1 million to support modernization of an industrial facility including roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, and energy efficiency improvements.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Carey Holdings Redevelopment: $1 million to support redevelopment of a former stadium site into a parking and access infrastructure project.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Dallas Suits: $1 million to support site preparation and infrastructure development for a mixed-use construction project including utilities, grading, and roadway improvements.<\/p>\n
\u2022 DeAngelo Youth Sports Complex: $3 million to construct an indoor youth sports complex in Hazle Twp., creating a regional facility with multi-sport courts and community gathering space.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Empire Street Redevelopment: $400,000 to support redevelopment of a historic mill into multi-family housing with structural, mechanical, and interior residential upgrades.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Gateway Shopping Center: $500,000 to support upgrades and expansion of a healthcare and commercial facility including HVAC replacement, roof work, and site improvements.<\/p>\n
\u2022 King\u2019s College track: $1 million to support reconstruction of a collegiate athletic track facility with surface replacement and NCAA-compliant field upgrades.<\/p>\n
\u2022 LCCC Hazleton: $1 million to renovate and expand the Hazleton Broad Street Exchange Building, creating a modern education and workforce training hub with classrooms, labs, and nursing program space.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Lumber yard conversion: $500,000 to support redevelopment of a former industrial building in Pittston into a mixed-use restaurant and event space with parking and site improvements.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Misericordia University LEAP Center: $500,000 to support renovation of a university facility including clinical labs, training spaces, fitness areas, and program support spaces.<\/p>\n
\u2022 SPCA campus: $500,000 to support construction of a new animal shelter campus with veterinary, adoption, and education facilities.<\/p>\n
Shapiro said these are great investments toward the future growth of the state.<\/p>\n
