\n\t\t\t\t\t\tAmong the many activities canceled across Pittsburgh Friday due to poor air quality, Picklesburgh was not one of them. Those responsible for putting on the 11th annual pickle-themed festival let people know Friday morning that despite the heavy presence of smoke, Day 2 would happen. Thousands still showed up, but not as many as vendors would\u2019ve liked to see. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a little bit less than what we\u2019ve seen historically at Picklesburgh, but we\u2019ve never experienced smog before,\u201d Mairin Patrone, of I\u2019Dill Pickle and the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, said. \u201cWe\u2019re really happy people are coming out. We want to make sure everyone is making the right decision for themselves.\u201d \u201cThe crowds are not as big,\u201d Wyatt Olson, with the Brinery at Two Acre Farm, said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to tell if that\u2019s from the smog or because the footprint is way bigger this year.\u201dA few visitors on Friday came prepared for the Code Purple air quality.\u201cWe wanted to make sure we could breathe safely without getting everything in our lungs,\u201d said Morgan Lounsbury, who decided to wear a mask outside. \u201cIt\u2019s not too bad. We tried it without the masks at first, but masks are helping for sure.\u201dThe smoke didn\u2019t just keep visitors away from the festivities. \u201cThree of our staff members are immunocompromised,\u201d Olson said. \u201cWe let them stay home. We told them to take it easy and that they\u2019re still getting paid.\u201d The workers who did show up had to take extra precautions. \u201cWe\u2019re all checking in on each other, making sure we\u2019re hydrated, and taking a lot of breaks since it\u2019s been hot,\u201d Patrone said. \u201cWe talked to all of our staff members and told them if you have any health issues or are uncomfortable being here, that\u2019s your decision to make.\u201dWhile these problematic conditions didn\u2019t make a difference for some stands, others are hopeful that things will clear up for the weekend. \u201cWe\u2019re up to par from last year in sales,\u201d Olson said. \u201cFrom the amount of people walking by, it does seem slower.\u201d\u201c definitely less than previous Picklesburghs,\u201d Patrone said. \u201cLike I mentioned before, is not something we\u2019ve experienced.\u201d However, some were happy something was going on downtown. \u201cIt\u2019s the only thing open,\u201d Tom Rybar, of Shaler, said. \u201cAll of the pools are closed.
