Thanks for waking up with us. I’m Yasmin Rodriguez. Another big weather concern storms possibly turning severe later today. Meteorologist Jill Sweat tracking it all on the severe weather alert day. And as that smoke moves out, gives more way for sunshine, warming, *** lot of ingredients needed for severe weather. So that’s why we’re posting that severe weather alert day today. So the smoke situation improves, storm. Though could hamper some of your outdoor plans here on your Saturday. Tomorrow we will see *** little bit more of that smoke moving back in, but conditions look *** whole lot better area wide. Still tracking some downpours and also non-severe thunderstorms moving out of Butler County. This is just just south of Shakora and extends up towards East Brady also into *** good portion of Clarion County, even north of I-80 at this point that’s going to continue to track towards Red Bank and eventually move into Jefferson County. You could see *** lot of lightning. But no warnings with this activity that’s moving through here as we work through this, uh, top of the 9 o’clock hour. We will see though more severe weather filing in after 4 o’clock today. Most of western Pennsylvania included in today’s enhanced or numerous risk for severe thunderstorms, that’s that orange shading that basically extends towards the I-70 corridor. Damaging winds will be our primary. but also some very heavy rain could lead to localized flash flooding. Let’s talk about the timing on this severe weather alert day. Most of the action holding off until after 4 o’clock. Still some pop-up activity can’t be ruled out after 20 today. There’s that line stretching out across most of Western Pennsylvania between about 5 and 7 o’clock again, strong winds, flash flooding will be. Concern activity will start to fade as we roll closer to 10:11 p.m. and again, *** little bit of *** haze moving in for your Sunday. Quieter day though by far, especially compared to where we’ve been over the past several days. And we still have more active weather possible into an impact day on Tuesday. Well, turning back now to the hazardous smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota stretching across *** large part of the country, including here in Pennsylvania. More than 100 million Americans are under air quality alerts as officials warn of the health risks, and FIFA is monitoring conditions ahead of tomorrow’s World Cup final. Here’s ABC’s Michelle Frazen with the latest. Video showing Canadian wildfire smoke pouring into major cities from the Midwest all the way to the East Coast, and today more than 100 million Americans are under air quality alerts as smoke from more than 900 wildfires burning across Canada blankets some US cities. It’s just gotten so, so, so bad. In Washington, the monuments are barely visible, some masking up on the National Mall. It’s affecting everybody’s. Physical activity, no doubt. In New York, the Statue of Liberty almost disappearing. In Cleveland, the Guardian’s postponing Friday night’s game against the Pirates due to air quality concerns. You do notice it when you’re out here though. You can smell it. And now growing concerns about Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey. MetLife Stadium has been shrouded in smoke for days. Sources tell ABC News FIFA is closely monitoring the air quality forecast ahead of kickoff in Canada. Many of the largest fires are burning in Ontario. Premier Doug Ford is asking the US to send more help. We’re throwing every single resource we have, Ford addressing criticism from some US Republican lawmakers who have accused Canada of failing to do enough to prevent wildfire smoke from drifting into the US They have gone as far as suggesting sanctions on Canada for mismanagement, Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. And the Pirates will play *** split doubleheader in Cleveland today after the smoke postponed last night’s game. It marks the 2nd Saturday in *** row the Bucks will play too. Coming up in Pittsburgh’s action sports, we’ll preview their return from the All-Star break, including today’s schedule and starting lineup. And take *** look at this drone 4 giving us *** look over the confluence of the three rivers showing the smog consuming the steel city yesterday. Several activities had to be canceled across Pittsburgh for poor air quality, but Picklesburg carried on as normal. Pittsburgh’s Action News war reporter Ed Diorio shows us how and the adjustments visitors made. Definitely *** little bit less than we’ve seen historically at Picklesbergs, but we’ve never experienced smog before. Even though thousands still showed up for day two of Picklesberg, the crowds are not as big, but it’s hard to tell if it’s for the smog or it’s because the footprint is way bigger this year. *** number of them came prepared for the code purple air quality. We wanted to make sure we could breathe safely without getting everything in. Not too bad. We tried it without the masks at first, and masks are helping for sure. The smoke didn’t just keep visitors away from the festivities. Three of our staff members who are immunocompromised, we let them stay home today. We just, they told them, take it easy. They’re still getting paid. And for the workers who did show up, we’re all just checking in on each other, making sure everyone stays hydrated, taking *** lot of breaks, especially because it’s been hot, while these problematic conditions. Didn’t make *** difference for some stands. We’re up to par from last year in sales, but from people walking by, it does seem slower. Others are hopeful that things clear up this weekend. Yeah, so it’s definitely less than previous Picklesbers, but as I mentioned before, this is not something we’ve experienced. However, some were just happy something was going on downtown. It’s the only thing open. All the polls are closed. I was going to come down for. mild. That was canceled and everything else. *** lot of things are canceled, so come to Picklesburg. Since the air isn’t stopping the pickle lovers. Listen, nothing can stop us getting pickles. Picklesburg is *** great time. It’s not stopping the festival either. The pickle party in Pittsburgh is the best event we do all year, and we don’t let any kind of thing stop us. We’re here ready to party at Diorio, Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. Ed, thank you. Well, Picklesburg as of right now is scheduled to happen as normal today, and they also announced the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership said they’re extending hours for the festival tomorrow. Picklesburg will open two hours early, running from 11:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. In *** statement, the CEO of the partnership says, quote, This weekend hasn’t gone the way we expected, but the forecast is turning *** corner, giving our vendors the finish they deserve. He then encouraged people to come out tomorrow. And just in this morning, Kennywood will reopen today after closing yesterday due to air quality. The park plans to open at noon as conditions continue to improve. Anyone who needs help with tickets can contact the park. And *** reminder, if you are headed out today, health experts say everyone should take precautions in these conditions with the heat and smoke, local doctors advise people to stay hydrated and pay attention to your symptoms because even *** little time outside can impact your health. It is not uncommon to feel *** little bit of *** sore throat, feeling *** little suffocated as soon as you step outside. It makes you breathe faster, and that increases your heart rate, so those are all the things uh you can feel symptoms wise, but it can also promote things like uh heart attacks. She goes on to say the particulate matter hidden in the air is so tiny it can get in your lungs easily, so *** mask can be helpful. New on 4 this morning, crews braving hazy conditions responding to *** fire in North For Sales Township on Lincoln Highway last night. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating that cause. And we’re just about *** week into the 25 day Parkway East closure. Just 16 days to go until August 3rd when it’s scheduled to reopen. Drne 4 showing how even in the current conditions, crews are making headway on removing the pieces of the old Commercial Street bridge that was imploded on Thursday. The process of sliding in the new bridge is expected to begin sometime next week. And one of the boroughs on *** busy detour route is trying to take advantage of the increased traffic. Reporter Chandy Chapman traveled to Homestead to find out how the closure is impacting businesses. The commercial street bridge detour now has drivers going into Homestead to get around the work, but businesses say it’s benefiting them, and they’re getting new customers because of the detour. Businesses like Los Galitos line 8th Avenue and Homestead. The manager of the restaurant says some people have no idea Homestead has *** business. District like this one, so the detour has helped introduce new customers to the area. So *** lot of people have been driving by, so they’ve been seeing *** lot more like, oh, there’s just more than just *** waterfront, so they see like the signs, the tacos, and like all the other local businesses around here. The restaurant also has *** food truck parked right outside. He says that has urged drivers to make *** stop and grab *** taco. Other business owners like Hannah Kemp, who owns Arabica Robusta Coffee Shop, says she’s noticed more people stopping by as well because of the detour. We were *** little bit uncertain if people would be frustrated, having to commute for, you know, *** different route and things like that, but no, we’ve turned into *** stop along the way, so that’s it’s. Nice, she says the timing of the traffic lights have made *** big difference, and drivers have been stopping by the shop, especially during the morning commute. I’d say the first couple of days with the shutdown, the lights weren’t really timed right, and so there was *** ton of backup happening, and I think that caused frustration. We didn’t have as many people coming, but now I’ve. Noticed like *** larger influx with our morning crowd. Some businesses say they’ve seen about 25% more customers now that the commercial street bridge project closed off roads, forcing drivers to travel alternate routes. Penn State and Pitt have both announced tuition hikes for the upcoming school years. Penn State University trustees approved the university’s $11 billion budget for the 2027-2028 school year. For in-state students, there will be *** 2.5% tuition increase at the main campus, but no. Increase for Commonwealth campuses out of state undergraduates, excuse me, at main campus will pay 4% more costs for housing and dining will also increase. And just last week, Pitt trustees voted to increase in state undergrad tuition by 3% for this upcoming semester and 4% for out of state students.
