Lawrence Park police and firefighters responded around 5:10 p.m. Sunday after a body was discovered in the waters of Lake Erie near the Lawrence Park Fishing Club off East Lake Road.<\/p>\n
The discovery was made by some jet skiers in an area along the shoreline near the Lawrence Park Golf Club and the former GE Picnic Grove. Erie County dispatchers confirmed that the Erie County Coroner was called to the scene.<\/p>\n
Authorities have not yet officially identified the person who was found.<\/p>\n
The discovery comes as family members and law enforcement continue to search for missing fisherman Corey Zearfoss, who was reported overdue after a fishing outing on July 8.<\/p>\n
Zearfoss’ boat was later found in Canadian waters near Long Point, Ontario, prompting an extensive search effort by the U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian authorities on both sides of Lake Erie. After searching a total of 2,756 square nautical miles for 60 hours, the Coast Guard suspended the official search on July 10.<\/p>\n
Officials have not confirmed whether the body recovered Sunday is Zearfoss. Investigators are expected to work to determine the person’s identity and notify family members.<\/p>\n
Emergency crews remained at the scene for a time Sunday evening until the body was turned over to the Erie County Coroner\u2019s office.<\/p>\n
