Voters in next year\u2019s Democratic primary election will decide who ultimately challenges Bresnahan for the congressional seat, but Democratic Scranton Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti and retired state administrative officer Francis McHale have announced runs to this point.<\/p>\n
Cognetti, who is running for reelection as Scranton\u2019s mayor in Tuesday\u2019s municipal election, declined to comment on Trump\u2019s endorsement of Bresnahan.<\/p>\n
McHale, a self-described \u201cpro-life Democrat\u201d who ran for Congress in 2000 but didn\u2019t advance beyond the primary, dismissed it.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis endorsement right now is meaningless because we\u2019re a year out from the election,\u201d said McHale, who criticized the president over his tariffs and other policies. \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned that\u2019s a plus for me for Trump to endorse him. That tells me they think \u2026 Bresnahan can\u2019t stand up on his own two feet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bresnahan\u2019s news release criticized Cognetti as a \u201cfar-left\u201d candidate. It didn\u2019t mention McHale.<\/p>\n
