The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) has raised toll rates 3.5 percent for all drivers, effective Jan. 3, 2027, the 19th consecutive annual increase \u2013 action necessitated, said PTC, by a 2007 state law requiring the commission to so far give up $ 8.1 billion to other statewide transportation entities.<\/p>\n
Turnpike officials said the increase is the lowest since 2014 and that rates are expected to drop to 3 percent by 2028.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe increase is in accordance with our Act 44 plan for toll rates,\u201d said PTC. \u201cThe increase of 3.5 percent is the lowest rate increase since 2014, and falls below the current national inflation rate level and will be used to repay Act 44 debt service.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than a half million vehicles use the Pennsylvania Turnpike each day, many of them in Bucks and Montgomery counties. Under the 3.5 percent rate increase, the per-mile rate rises from $0.073 to $0.075. Driving from the Philadelphia Interchange in Bucks to Harrisburg West costs about $18.40 with E-ZPass. That is about $0.60 to $0.70 more than the 2026 rate.<\/p>\n
Before Act 44, turnpike rates increased five times in 64 years, according to PTC. The Act obligates PTC to fund statewide ground transportation systems along with its own operations. It said its has so far funded $8.1 billion.<\/p>\n
PTC officials said that despite the Act 44 impact, it has maintained rates that are middle of the pack compared to other toll roads, bridges and tunnels nationwide.
