A Berks County man was arrested in Boyertown over the weekend after police said he fled attempted traffic stops by two departments \u2014 one on each side of the Montgomery County line \u2014 and then circled back to taunt an officer before being taken into custody.<\/p>\n
Eastern Berks Regional Police charged Nicholas A. Kelly, 25, of Muhlenberg Township with fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, flight to avoid apprehension, DUI, reckless endangerment and driving with a suspended license.<\/p>\n
Kelly, of the 1800 block of Mount Laurel Road, was committed to Berks County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.<\/p>\n
According to court documents:<\/p>\n
Just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Eastern Berks officers were alerted to be on the lookout for a black motorcycle that had fled across the Berks County line on Route 73 after an attempted stop by police in Douglass Township, Montgomery County.<\/p>\n
Officer Steve Recchilongo was leaving the Eastern Berks station on West Philadelphia Avenue (Route 73) in Boyertown when the alert came out. He parked at East Philadelphia Avenue and Berks Street and soon heard the motorcycle approaching westbound at high speed.<\/p>\n
Recchilongo pulled out as the bike passed and activated his lights and siren. The rider accelerated, and Recchilongo ended the pursuit after about a block for safety reasons. He notified Central Berks Regional police, who patrol Oley Township, that the motorcycle might be heading their way on Route 73.<\/p>\n
Recchilongo resumed patrol. While traveling north on South Reading Avenue (Route 562) near Third Street, he saw the same motorcycle come up behind him at high speed as he approached the intersection with Route 73.<\/p>\n
The rider stayed about a car length behind the patrol vehicle, revving the engine and staring at the officer. Recchilongo could not see the rider\u2019s face because he was wearing a full\u2011face helmet.<\/p>\n
Recchilongo told the rider to \u201cjust go,\u201d later explaining he was not interested in \u201cplaying a game of chasing a motorcycle around town.\u201d The rider continued revving the engine. As the taunting continued, Recchilongo accelerated, made a wide turn in front of the motorcycle and quickly got out of his vehicle.<\/p>\n
The rider \u2014 later identified as Kelly \u2014 tried to put the bike in gear, but it stalled. Recchilongo grabbed him and tried to pull him off the motorcycle.<\/p>\n
Kelly then began reaching toward his waistband. Fearing he was attempting to draw a weapon, Recchilongo broke contact, drew his service weapon and ordered Kelly to the ground.<\/p>\n
Kelly instead restarted the motorcycle and began doing burnouts, causing the rear wheel to swing around and strike Recchilongo\u2019s left ankle.<\/p>\n
A second officer arrived and helped take Kelly into custody. Police said Kelly smelled of alcohol, and beer was leaking from his backpack. While searching for identification, officers found two 16\u2011ounce cans of beer.<\/p>\n
The motorcycle displayed a counterfeit registration, police said. A check of Kelly\u2019s license showed it was suspended, and he was listed as a habitual offender due to multiple DUI convictions.<\/p>\n
Kelly was taken to the Berks County Central Processing Center for a legal blood draw, which he refused.<\/p>\n
