Editor: The community I grew up in has changed a lot over the course of my life. \u00a0Through all of those changes, one thing has remained important: seeing families succeed, put down roots and build a future right here in our community.<\/p>\n
Strong neighborhoods are built when young people feel they can stay in their hometowns and raise their children the same way they were brought up. And that requires that they know their local leaders support them.<\/p>\n
Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti\u2019s new city contracts are the opposite of providing local leadership and support. Newly hired city employees are no longer guaranteed 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, even as existing employees continue to receive that benefit. Democrats talk a big game about using government spending to support working families, but when in power they send the absolutely wrong message.<\/p>\n
Welcoming a child into the world should be a joyful milestone, not one made more difficult by Scranton\u2019s mayor.<\/p>\n
I want to live in a place where our elected officials support pregnant women and actually do something to help strengthen them and their families. \u00a0At a bare minimum, the mayor\u2019s administration should lead by example. If our community is revitalized it will be in spite of Cognetti\u2019s anti-family policies, not because of them.<\/p>\n
