The city allocated $2.5 million for this year’s summer paving program, resurfacing about 7.6 miles of roadway across 72 streets on both the east and west sides.<\/p>\n
Officials said road conditions, resident requests, utility work and new pavement imaging technology all played a role in deciding which streets made this year’s list.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Funding totaling $12.5 million to go to Erie County development projects\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n “For the streets department, they’re way ahead of schedule right now. So, they had 37 streets on their list; they have 11 left at this point, so we’re well ahead of schedule. Weather has helped quite a bit, and just our total summer productivity has been really well all summer long,” Jeff Gibbens, the assistant director of Public Works for the City of Erie, said.<\/p>\n When it comes to how fast the streets can be redone, it depends on more than just the weather. Although Gibbens said the weather has been cooperating to help the process go along faster.<\/p>\n “Yeah, so weather is a big indicator there because you know a lot of rain we can milk, but we can’t pave. And also, the asphalt plants and their ability to get us in and out, and they’ve been very well doing that” Gibbens said.<\/p>\n The city does its road pavement using a mill and fill system. The workers mill the street down 2-2.5 inches, then repave it with the same amount of asphalt.<\/p>\n The city plans to redo streets every summer with the goal for them to last between 15 and 20 years, depending on the severity of each year’s weather cycle.<\/p>\n “It all depends; there is a lot of variables. Winter is tough. We have a light winter? It’s a lot easier. We have like what we just had, where any day has potholes, things like that so.
