Tim Murphy, who served as a U.S. representative for Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district from 2003 to 2017, has died at age 73<\/p>\n

The Republican Committee of Allegheny County confirmed the late politician’s death in a Facebook post on Sunday, July 19<\/p>\n

“I was devastated to hear the completely unexpected news of Congressman Tim Murphy’s passing,” Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman said in a tribute<\/p>\n

Former Pennsylvania Rep. Tim Murphy has died at age 73.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, July 19, the Republican Committee of Allegheny County confirmed Murphy’s death while paying tribute in a Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Their message read, “It is with a heavy heart that we share, Congressman Tim Murphy passed away.”<\/p>\n

“Throughout his years of public service, he dedicated himself to representing his constituents and serving our country with conviction and commitment. We are grateful for his contributions and the lasting impact he made on his community and our nation,” the committee added.<\/p>\n

Their post continued, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. May they find comfort during this difficult time.”<\/p>\n

“Rest in peace, Congressman Tim Murphy,” it concluded.<\/p>\n

Per ABC affiliate <\/a>WTAE<\/a>, the politician died late Saturday night. Further details regarding his cause of death have not yet been released.<\/p>\n

Murphy<\/a>, a Republican,\u00a0resigned in 2017<\/a>\u00a0after serving as the U.S. representative for Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District since 2003. His resignation followed the revelation that the\u00a0staunchly anti-abortion congressman had an\u00a0extramarital affair and subsequently urged his then-mistress to get an abortion, according to reports from\u00a0NBC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0ABC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman, who served as Murphy’s field director from 2003 to 2005, was among those paying tribute.<\/p>\n

He wrote on Facebook<\/a>, “I was devastated to hear the completely unexpected news of Congressman Tim Murphy’s passing. Twenty years ago, Tim was my boss. In the years since, he became a dear friend and one of my most influential political mentors.”<\/p>\n

“Tim was a true statesman who cared deeply about the people he represented. Whether you agreed with his policies or not, no one could deny his unwavering commitment to his constituents or the tireless work ethic he brought to public service every single day. He was one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever known,” Sherman went on in the statement, which was also obtained by PEOPLE.<\/p>\n

He continued, “On a personal level, I truly would not be where I am today without Tim Murphy. He believed in me, challenged me, and helped shape both my career and my approach to public service. His guidance, friendship, and example left a lasting impact on my life, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside him. He will be deeply missed.”<\/p>\n

“My heart goes out to his wife, Nan, his daughter, Bevin, and his grandchildren during this incredibly difficult time,” Sherman concluded.<\/p>\n
