{"id":2487,"date":"2025-10-15T20:55:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T20:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/2487\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T20:55:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T20:55:11","slug":"phillys-volunteer-center-for-the-fifa-world-cup-opens-in-the-fashion-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/2487\/","title":{"rendered":"Philly&#8217;s volunteer center for the FIFA World Cup opens in the Fashion District"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philly\u2019s local host committee for the 2026 FIFA World Cup unveiled its volunteer center in the East Market\u2019s Fashion District mall on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Located in a two-story, 18,000-square-foot space that was previously used for events like <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/banksy-immersive-exhibition-fashion-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Banksy immersive exhibition<\/a>, it will serve as the city\u2019s administrative hub for the tournament. It will also be the headquarters and main waiting point for volunteers, before they\u2019re sent out to key locations during the tournament \u2014 in and around Lincoln Financial Field, for sure, but also at the Lemon Hill fanfest, Philadelphia International Airport and other popular transport locations for the games.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/10-15-2025-k-paynter-philadelphia-fifa-world-cup-volunteer-center-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217605\"  \/>The FIFA World Cup 2026\u2122 volunteer uniform on display at the opening of the volunteer center in Philadelphia\u2019s Fashion District on October 15th, 2025. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>Aubrey Walton, FIFA\u2019s executive director of host cities, said that it was one of the first volunteer centers to be fully operational across all 16 host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhilly continually sets the bar for other host cities because you understand something fundamental,\u201d she said. \u201cVolunteers aren\u2019t just helping run the tournament. They are the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The space is where tournament volunteers likely will spend most of their time while working on the tournament, and it comes packed with ways to avoid boredom during their down time. The walls are covered with tournament factoids and vibrant colors. There are TV screens, and tables for foosball and Teqball \u2014 a soccer-table tennis hybrid game. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really the clubhouse for the volunteers \u2014 the mothership, if you will,\u201d said Alison Grove, Philadelphia Soccer 2026\u2019s volunteer lead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phillyfwc26.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Soccer 2026<\/a> said that the city had received 26,000 applications from the over 1 million submitted to FIFA during the volunteer application period. It was among the top in volunteer applications, FIFA said. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>After an interview and vetting process, which begins tomorrow, Philly plans to select just over 3,000 volunteers to train for the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Philly was part of FIFA\u2019s dress rehearsal for the World Cup, hosting eight games this past summer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/07\/05\/fifa-club-world-cup-chelsea-palmeiras-july-fourth-quarterfinal-soccer-linc-cole-palmer-estevao\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA Club World Cup<\/a>. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>Among them was West Philly resident Mosab Mohammadi, who helped with the center launch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really was an amazing experience full of memories,\u201d he recalled about the past summer. \u201cMeeting a lot of people from different backgrounds. We had a lot of international people, even at the Club World Cup. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>The tournament plans to have more than 65,000 volunteers involved across all its venues, the most ever for any sporting event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s going to make the World Cup so special,\u201d said City of Philadelphia Director Michael Newmuis. \u201cNot just the matches, but the thousands of volunteers who will greet visitors, answer questions, share directions and show the world what Philadelphia is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Cup begins in Mexico City on June 11 and ends on July 19 at New Jersey\u2019s Metlife Stadium. Philly\u2019s Linc will host six of the tournament\u2019s 104 games, including a round-of-16 match on July 4 that will coincide with the country\u2019s semiquincentennial celebrations. Overall, FIFA expects 6.5 million fans to travel across the globe for the festivities. <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/09\/08\/fifa-world-cup-philadephia-volunteer-ticket-applications-linc-lemon-hill-fashion-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The first lottery draw for tickets<\/a> just concluded and the second takes place\u00a0 Oct. 27-31, with the time slots for the randomly selected applicants held in mid-November. High ticket prices and FIFA\u2019s early implementation of dynamic pricing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6705495\/2025\/10\/10\/world-cup-usmnt-fifa-collect-rtb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a \u201cright to buy\u201d token<\/a> system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/10\/12\/nx-s1-5564717\/fifa-world-cup-fans-are-outraged-over-what-they-say-are-unprecedented-ticket-prices\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have already drawn criticism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/10-15-2025-k-paynter-philadelphia-fifa-world-cup-volunteer-center-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217595\"  \/>The 1970-2022 FIFA World Cup\u2122 miniature collectable balls on display for the opening of The FIFA World Cup 2026\u2122 volunteer center in the Fashion District. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>June 11, 2026, will also be the opening day of <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2024\/06\/20\/philadelphia-2026-fifa-world-cup-fan-festival-site-east-fairmount-park-lemon-hill\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philly\u2019s fanfest location at East Fairmount Park\u2019s Lemon Hill<\/a>, where fans without game tickets can watch a live broadcast of the action, along with music, food and other entertainment. Construction to enhance Lemon Hill began in September.<\/p>\n<p>Grove said the hosting team is focused on creating a legacy that lasts long after the tournament is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe World Cup is huge, but it\u2019s a moment in time. It takes years of preparation to bring it here and then they move on,\u201d she\u00a0 said. \u201cSo, what do we have to show for it afterwards? We\u2019re going to have a spectacular new park at Lemon Hill where we\u2019re hosting the fan festival. We\u2019re going to have new places to play and people to teach kids how to play soccer across the city and across the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FIFA also contributed to that legacy <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/04\/11\/fifa-president-gianni-infantino-visit-club-world-cup-lemon-hill-eagles\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with a $1 million donation<\/a>, something it did for all 11 host cities for the Club World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the money should go to soccer facilities in areas of need and activities with local associations.<\/p>\n<p>Part of that legacy also involves helping to revitalize the Market East corridor, a section of the city that has <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/market-east-comcast-sixers-investment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggled to thrive for decades<\/a> and was the center of a tumultuous, failed bid to build a new arena for the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/10-15-2025-k-paynter-philadelphia-fifa-world-cup-volunteer-center.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217608\"  \/>The FIFA World Cup 2026\u2122 volunteer center opened in Philadelphia\u2019s Fashion District on October 15th, 2025.
