{"id":249733,"date":"2026-07-22T21:38:47","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T21:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/249733\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T21:38:47","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T21:38:47","slug":"increased-state-funding-for-rape-crisis-centers-brings-hope-and-optimism-for-survivors-allentown-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/249733\/","title":{"rendered":"Increased state funding for rape crisis centers brings hope and optimism for survivors | Allentown Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. &#8212; Pennsylvania&#8217;s new budget offers increased support to those who need it most.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It includes an extra $12 million for the state&#8217;s rape crisis centers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has been made over the years for Sexual Assault Awareness Month,&#8221; said Emily Gragonis, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvclv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Crime Victims Council (CVC) of the Lehigh Valley<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Denim patches made by survivors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Specifically, Denim Day, to protest victim blaming around sexual violence,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the 53-year-old center faced flat state funding, declining federal support, and growing demand.<\/p>\n<p>The new state budget provides $24.1 million for the state&#8217;s 47 rape crisis centers, twice last year&#8217;s amount.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It just restored some hope and optimism,&#8221; Gragonis said.<\/p>\n<p>CVC staff and survivors recently took the need directly to lawmakers in Harrisburg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing that work pay off and having, especially survivor voices, be heard and create impact is why we do this work,&#8221; Gragonis said of the increased funding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Survivors don&#8217;t always come forward in the beginning, but somebody needs to be there for when they are ready,&#8221; said Ashley Caravello.<\/p>\n<p>She knows the value of those services. A survivor of sex exploitation, she&#8217;s worked for <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomforwomen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloom for Women<\/a>, a community partner of the Crime Victim Council, for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>She says effective support starts at meeting survivors where they are.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because they don&#8217;t always know what services are available to them,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Back at CVC, Gragonis hopes increased funding will help expand services to children, including more child therapy space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Giving them a space to comfortably talk about it.
