EASTON, Pa. \u2013 Easton is readying to update regulations involving an emerging and already popular transportation form.<\/p>\n

During his report at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Sal Panto said the city is looking at electric bicycles.<\/p>\n

“They have become a real problem in the Lehigh Valley,” the mayor said. “Allentown has had a couple of deaths. Fortunately, we have not had any major incident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panto said his administration is attempting to address the issue proactively “instead of waiting until something happens.” This will be implemented by updating the e-bike ordinance, which will be done at City Council’s next meeting.<\/p>\n

The mayor added he authorized signs on trails prohibiting e-bikes.<\/p>\n

“They don’t make any noise, so they scare people,” Panto said.<\/p>\n

Code updates<\/p>\n

City Council approved amendments to codes governing property maintenance<\/a> and rental properties.<\/p>\n

The amendments involve defining access ways along with private, unnamed, vacated and unimproved streets along with exterior maintenance directives, requirements and subsequent prohibitions. The changes generally govern obstructions and hazardous conditions. Specifically, one aspect of the changes note that obstructions cannot restrict access by emergency responders, utility providers, municipal officials or anyone possessing lawful access rights.<\/p>\n

A violation will now be considered a “public nuisance” and subject to enforcement. The city may also take action is deems needed to remove or abate the obstruction.<\/p>\n

Residential rental licensing<\/p>\n

The amendments<\/a> involving residential rental licensing delete sections implemented in 2020 which governed the registration by city neighborhoods and corresponding dates in the calendar year.<\/p>\n

Under the section listing units that would not be considered regulated rental units, the changes also include deleting \u201chotels and motels used for transient visitors to the area, but without units that serve the same purpose as rooming house units.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EASTON, Pa. \u2013 Easton is readying to update regulations involving an emerging and already popular transportation form.
