Pennsylvania State Police Seize over 30 Animals in Alleged Neglect Case<\/p>\n

Youngsville, PA \u2014 Two Youngsville residents are facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after Pennsylvania State Police alleged an animal neglect investigation led to the seizure of 31 animals from their property.<\/p>\n
Christine VanGuilder, 45, and Jason Farnham, 42, were charged following an investigation that began after troopers received a complaint of suspected animal cruelty. According to state police, investigators obtained a search warrant on June 29th and removed 31 animals from the property, including 25 dogs, three cats, one guinea pig and two fancy rats.<\/p>\n
State police allege the animals were living in unsanitary conditions without access to clean food, safe drinking water or adequate veterinary care. Investigators also allege several of the dogs had contracted canine parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease.<\/p>\n
According to police, the animals were surrendered to PAWS Along the River, where they are receiving veterinary treatment and ongoing care.<\/p>\n
VanGuilder and Farnham are each charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals (torture), six counts of aggravated cruelty to animals resulting in serious bodily injury or death, 31 counts of neglect of animals for allegedly failing to provide necessary veterinary care, one count of violating kennel requirements, one count related to dog licensing requirements and fees, and 13 counts of failing to provide proof of required rabies vaccinations.<\/p>\n
“This is my second large surrender and\/or seize for the year, and it seems to be a growing problem within the county,” said Cpl. Noelle Koebley of the Pennsylvania State Police. “While it’s not necessarily a crime to own a bunch of animals, people do have to remember that there are laws regarding kennel licenses. So, if you don’t have the space to house and properly take care of those animals, it’s encouraged that you own what you are able to maintain and afford.”<\/p>\n
Koebley said state police work closely with PAWS Along the River and other animal welfare organizations throughout the region, not only to safely remove animals from dangerous situations, but also to help pet owners who may be struggling before neglect reaches the point of criminal charges.<\/p>\n
Records show VanGuilder and Farnham were each released on their own recognizance, with bail set at $10,000.00 unsecured. As conditions of their release, both were ordered to have no ownership of, contact with or care for any animals while the case is pending.<\/p>\n
