As hemp-derived products continue to grow in popularity and availability, health officials say many consumers may not fully understand what these products contain or the effects they may have. Hemp-derived THC products are commonly sold as beverages, gummies, candies, baked goods, and other edible items in retail locations throughout the region.<\/p>\n
The Erie County Department of Health warns that hemp-derived THC products may:<\/p>\n
Cause impairment and affect judgment, coordination, and reaction time<\/p>\n
Trigger anxiety, dizziness, confusion, or hallucinations in some individuals<\/p>\n
Increase the risk of accidental overconsumption, particularly with edibles that can take one to four hours before effects are felt<\/p>\n
Interact with prescription medications<\/p>\n
Lead to a positive drug screening test<\/p>\n
Pose serious risks to children and pets if accidentally consumed<\/p>\n
Unlike products sold through Pennsylvania\u2019s regulated medical marijuana program, many hemp-derived THC products are available in convenience stores, specialty shops, and other retail settings where consumers may view them as similar to traditional food and beverage products.<\/p>\n
Some hemp-derived THC products may resemble soft drinks, candy, snacks, or other items that may appeal to children. Product labels and packaging do not always clearly communicate that THC is present, and cannabinoid content may vary significantly between manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Changes to federal law expected to take effect in November 2026 are anticipated to significantly restrict the sale of certain hemp-derived cannabinoid products. The changes are intended to address concerns surrounding the widespread availability of products that emerged following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.<\/p>\n
The Erie County Department of Health recommends that residents:<\/p>\n
Do not assume that \u201chemp-derived\u201d means non-intoxicating<\/p>\n
Keep THC-containing products securely stored and out of the reach of children and pets<\/p>\n
Never drive or operate machinery after consuming any product that may cause impairment, including THC products or medical marijuana<\/p>\n
Consult with a healthcare provider before using THC products if taking prescription medications or managing a chronic health condition<\/p>\n
