{"id":250604,"date":"2026-07-23T21:24:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T21:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/250604\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T21:24:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T21:24:07","slug":"u-s-government-drops-request-for-penn-to-turn-over-jewish-info-nbc10-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/250604\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. government drops request for Penn to turn over Jewish info \u2013 NBC10 Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Officials with the Trump administration have officially dropped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/judge-says-penn-must-share-information-about-jewish-employees-to-u-s-government\/4377761\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/judge-says-penn-must-share-information-about-jewish-employees-to-u-s-government\/4377761\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">their request for the University of Pennsylvania to hand over a list of names of Jewish people on campus<\/a>, according to new court documents. <\/p>\n<p>This comes months after a federal judge ordered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nbcphiladelphia.com\/tag\/university-of-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the University of Pennsylvania<\/a>\u00a0to hand over records about Jewish employees on campus to a federal agency as part of an investigation into antisemitic discrimination but said it did not have to reveal any employee\u2019s affiliation with a specific group.<\/p>\n<p>But, on July 23, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission submitted a request for dismissal of that subpoena. <\/p>\n<p>It is not unusual for federal investigators looking into employment discrimination to request identities of employees of a particular religion, to facilitate outreach to people who may have been victims, according to a former federal official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission investigation was prompted in part by a series of incidents, including that someone had shouted antisemitic obscenities and destroyed property at a Jewish student life center, a Nazi swastika was painted on an academic building and \u201chateful graffiti\u201d was left outside a fraternity.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation has also focused on actions related to protests over the war in Gaza, and Penn\u2019s response to that and other incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The EEOC claimed in a November filing that Penn\u2019s \u201cworkplace is replete with antisemitism,\u201d and it told the judge that investigators think \u201cidentification of those who have witnessed and\/or been subjected to the environment is essential for determining whether the work environment was both objectively and subjectively hostile.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Officials with the Trump administration have officially dropped their request for the University of Pennsylvania to hand over&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":250605,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[28,30,29,723,4347],"class_list":["post-250604","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-pennsylvania","tag-pennsylvania","tag-pennsylvania-headlines","tag-pennsylvania-news","tag-trump-administration","tag-university-of-pennsylvania"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/250604","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=250604"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/250604\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/250605"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=250604"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=250604"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=250604"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
