Philadelphia spent months preparing for a historic stretch of major events that culminated with the nation’s 250th birthday celebration<\/a> when the city simultaneously hosted activities at Lemon Hill, on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and in South Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

City Chief Public Safety Director Adam Geer said the extensive planning effort paid off allowing the city to safely manage thousands of visitors during overlapping sports and entertainment events.<\/p>\n

“The good news is it was, I think, a tremendous success and it really showcased the city,” Geer said.<\/p>\n

As the city gets a chance to catch its breath, Geer said the planning process involved constant coordination among agencies and officials.<\/p>\n

“There was a regular cadence of meetings dedicated to, let’s say, safety issues, a regular cadence of meetings dedicated to human trafficking issues and everything in between,” Geer said. “Large meetings where we were at the 50,000-foot level talking about things and then minutiae level details on specific issues on what we might see. It was a regular, reoccurring series of meetings.”<\/p>\n

While there were no major man-made incidents of violence or disruption, organizers did face challenges, including storms that prompted an evacuation before a concert and fireworks pushed back by hours<\/a>. The city’s Emergency Operations Center was activated that night.<\/p>\n

Geer credited the successful run of events to cooperation among local, state and federal agencies.<\/p>\n

The Department of Homeland Security also praised security efforts across the United States, saying that through more than a month of competition and dozens of matches, there were no major security incidents at any stadium or FIFA Fan Festival in the country.<\/p>\n

In Philadelphia, more than a half-million people attended the FIFA Fan Festival<\/a>, one of several major events the city hosted during the busy stretch.<\/p>\n

Asked whether there was anxiety about pulling everything off, Geer said confidence came from the team assembled behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

“When you’re surrounded with all the professionals that we had in the room meeting regularly, you are absolutely reassured,” Geer said. “No one person did this alone. No one person was responsible.”<\/p>\n
