Perhaps you\u2019ve caught a glimpse over it rising not just above but through the historic glasshouse at Phipps, resembling a towering stalk of asparagus? Currently growing so large that Phipps staff had to remove a glass pane from the Desert Room ceiling, this colossal Agave americana is\u00a0making its final triumphant appearance before its inevitable decline. Phipps explains that the \u201cbig bloom signifies that this plant is about to reach the end of its life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seems like the perfect occasion for a plant party! Join Phipps to celebrate<\/a> this horticultural wonder and bid a fond adieu to the \u201cgentle giant after\u00a0more than 50 years\u00a0of beauty.\u201d Once the bloom reaches its peak, Phipps will remove the agave. It\u2019s all part of the plant\u2019s natural process to continue its legacy through the production of offshoots \u2014 aka \u201cpups\u201d \u2014 which visitors can observe growing around the plant. Celebrate this stunning succulent with a variety of activities as you explore the plant with Phipps horticulturists. Animating to the Frick\u2019s Point Breeze campus for its 12th season, the summer series presents a dynamic lineup of performers, art-making activities and food purveyors. Get set for a \u201cplaidtastic polka party\u201d under the stars when one of Pittsburgh\u2019s most energetic groups takes the stage. Blending traditional polka with punk, rock and roots influences, The Polkamaniacs will share their spirited music showcasing accordion, guitars, banjo, trombone and more. Dance and laugh along to their Pittsburgh-centric songs, lively stage antics and interactive shows welcoming all ages. Thaddeus G. Mosley at 100: A Symposium at Carnegie Museum of Art

On March 6, the art world and all of Pittsburgh said farewell to groundbreaking sculptor and Western Pennsylvania native Thaddeus G. Mosley. Join Carnegie Museum of Art, the Mosley family and the August Wilson African American Cultural Center for this weekend of celebration<\/a> honoring the artist\u2019s legacy on what would have been Mosley\u2019s milestone 100th birthday. Family, friends, scholars, students, collectors and fans will come together to explore \u201clanguage and narratives about the contexts, influences and inspirations that informed the artist\u2019s multifaceted life and work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sessions will explore how Mosley\u2019s artistic practice intersected with jazz and poetry, as well as his influence on creatives working in a wide range of disciplines. Discussions will center on intergenerational collecting and his legacy of nurturing family members within the community. The day culminates with a performance of \u201cSculptures at an Exhibition,\u201d a four-movement jazz work composed collaboratively by Roger Humphries, Dwayne Dolphin, Howie Alexander and Flavio Chamis in response to Mosley\u2019s prolific sculpture. Downtown Pittsburgh\u2019s newest civic space is now home to this first-ever Family Fest running on Saturdays throughout the summer. Located between Penn Avenue and Fort Duquesne Boulevard, Arts Landing<\/a> features a 4-acre public space operated by the Pittsburgh Culture Trust. Designed by prominent landscape architecture firm Field Operations, the site encompasses a 1-acre great lawn, public art, an entertainment stage, a pedestrian-friendly garden walk, a courtyard, recreation areas and more.<\/p>\n

Ideal for families with children ages 1-13, Family Fest<\/a> offers a day of free activities and entertainment throughout Arts Landing. Fast forward two decades, and the beloved green space draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Located near the Carnegie and Hillman libraries, Cathedral of Learning and Frick Fine Arts Building, the plaza provides popular gathering spaces on the iconic Arthur D. Who wants a noisy weed whacker and toxic chemicals when we have industrious, intelligent and irresistibly cute goats? One of Pittsburgh\u2019s most unusual festivals returns for its ninth edition<\/a> to spread an eco mission and captivate Pittsburghers. Watch the Allegheny GoatScape herd up-close as they transform the urban green space by making a meal out of destructive, invasive plants. The animal kingdom\u2019s natural gardeners have aided volunteer efforts to plant 5,000 native trees, shrubs and perennials throughout the park, helping to mitigate landslide risks, reduce erosion, improve air quality and expand wildlife habitats. The addition of a fruit orchard has further highlighted the park\u2019s value as a neighborhood green space.<\/p>\n

Hike the trails, visit the petting zoo and don\u2019t miss the Build Your Own Garden plant sale. Hosted by Friends of South Side Park, the free event also includes an artisan market, live music and food trucks. Cruise along Smallman Street to experience local heritage, iconic vendors and neighborhood vitality. Next, roll up Butler Street to take in all that the eclectic community has to offer, from murals and indie boutiques to coffeehouses and galleries.<\/p>\n
