BERKS COUNTY, Pa. – Gov. Josh Shapiro announced that planned ICE detention facilities in Berks and Schuylkill Counties will not be moving forward.<\/p>\n
The Department of Homeland Security had purchased a warehouse in Upper Bern Township for $87 million back in February.<\/p>\n
It faced bipartisan backlash from lawmakers and community members alike.<\/p>\n
Many community members expressed concerns over the facilities’ impact on the water and sewage infrastructure, as well as the loss of tax revenue.<\/p>\n
Shapiro has revealed two letters sent to state officials from ICE confirming the change.<\/p>\n
