{"id":25303,"date":"2025-11-05T08:31:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T08:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/25303\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T08:31:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T08:31:07","slug":"downingtown-elects-pennsylvanias-first-openly-transgender-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/25303\/","title":{"rendered":"Downingtown elects Pennsylvania\u2019s first openly transgender mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A small town just a few dozen miles west of Philadelphia made history Wednesday morning by electing Pennsylvania\u2019s first openly transgender mayor.\n<\/p>\n<p>Unofficial results show that Democrat Erica Deuso defeated Republican Richard Bryant, becoming the mayor-elect of Downingtown in Chester County.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight, the numbers are clear,\u201d Deuso said in a statement early Wednesday morning. \u201cWe won. Voters chose hope, decency, and a community where every neighbor matters. I am honored to be elected as Pennsylvania\u2019s first openly transgender mayor. I carry that responsibility with care and with purpose.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Home to about 9,000 people, Downingtown is governed by a six-member council. The mayor casts tie-breaking votes, oversees police and fire personnel, and performs ceremonial duties. Sitting Democratic Mayor Phil Dague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailylocal.com\/2024\/11\/08\/dague-wont-seek-second-term-as-downingtown-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declined to run for a second term<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/primary-election-2025-pennsylvania-suburbs-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opening the door for the historic race<\/a>.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Deuso scored the local Democratic Party\u2019s endorsement and <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/election-2025-downingtown-pennsylvania-mayoral-primary-deuso-bryant\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defeated challenger Barry Cassidy during May\u2019s primary<\/a>. She focused her campaign on issues such as housing affordability, domestic violence and combatting teen suicide, rather than her identity.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis victory is not about one person. It is about what happens when people choose progress over fear, facts over noise, and results over excuses,\u201d Deuso said. \u201cLeadership can be compassionate, practical, and focused on what works.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Bryant, the GOP nominee, has a background in cybersecurity. His campaign focused on preventing \u201coverdevelopment,\u201d solving Downingtown\u2019s flooding issues and fortifying public safety. Bryant ran unopposed during the primary election.
