I&#8217;ve been finding out some things I&#8217;d like to join, like the army,\u201d said the 13-year-old, who will be in eighth grade at Northeast Intermediate School in Scranton in the fall. \u201cI want to design things someday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration for the Scranton School District&#8217;s Career Quest Summer Camp filled quickly. Representatives from different businesses, colleges and careers join the 90 fifth- through eighth-grade students each day, leading them in activities and exposing them to possibilities. The camp, which includes meals and transportation to Scranton High School, is funded with a grant from the Lackawanna County Workforce Development Board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m hoping that this is something that we can grow and do again next year,\u201d said Katona Woodbridge, the district\u2019s STEMM (science, technology, engineering, math and medicine) program supervisor. \u201cThe kids seem to be fully immersed, and I mean it&#8217;s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learning about careers<\/p>\n<p>Camp started Monday with students learning about civil service. A visit from the Scranton Fire Department included a lesson on how firefighters use levers and pulleys. Students watched a police dog demonstration and learned how the U.S. Postal Service delivers mail \u2014 a lesson that captivated students since most had never mailed a letter, Woodbridge said.<\/p>\n<p>Students learned about careers in education and food service on Tuesday, with the rest of the week including health care, engineering and manufacturing. Grande, recruiter and front-of-house experience manager with Lackawanna\u2019s student-run restaurant, told students about options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many jobs in this industry, and if you look around in Northeastern Pennsylvania, we need good bakeries. We need good chefs,\u201d she said. \u201cNow in a post-COVID world, it&#8217;s a sustainable job. They&#8217;re looking for educated chefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keegan Tigue and his friends aren\u2019t sure what they want to do after high school. But they have time \u2014 Keegan will start seventh grade at the district\u2019s STEMM Academy this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The friends worked on their cupcakes, taking a short break to list the many things they had learned after only two days at camp.
