Quakertown\u2019s run in the Pennsylvania American Legion State Tournament ended Tuesday, Greater Pittston breaking a 1-1 tie on David Fath\u2019s bases-clearing single in the top of the fifth inning and went on to beat the Blue Jays 4-1 in Williamsport.<\/p>\n
Greater Pittston remained undefeated heading into the tournament\u2019s final day and faces Chambersburg, which shut out Philipsburg 2-0, 11 a.m. Wednesday. Greater Pittston needs one win to claim the state title while Chambersburg needs two. State champ advances to the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Region in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts Aug. 6-9.<\/p>\n
Peyton Trappler went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Bux-Mont and Region 2 champion Quakertown, which was looking to win its first state title since back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n
Fath was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Greater Pittston while Jake Aftewicz went 2-for-4.<\/p>\n
Greater Pittston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an Aftewicz\u2019s two-out RBI single.<\/p>\n
Quakertown answered with a run in its half of the first. Cole Reich hit a one-out double to center but was at third on a Gerry Stanziola fielder\u2019s choice to the shortstop. Justin Hankinson, however, kept the inning going with a walk and Trappler followed with a single to bring in Stanziola, making it 1-1.<\/p>\n
Greater Pittston took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth on four straight singles \u2013 bases hits Aftewicz, Gavin Wardecki and Dom Salvo loading the bases for Fath, who drove in all three with a single to left field.<\/p>\n
In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays put two on after consecutive two-outs walks by William Bowen and Anderson. Everitt but the next batter flying out to center stranded both. Quakertown had two on with one out in the seventh after Stanziola was hit by a pitch and Hankinson walked but Greater Pittston turned a 5-4-3 double play to secure its win.<\/p>\n
Greater Pittston starting pitcher Caleb Pavinski went six innings in earning the victory, allowing one run \u2013 earned \u2013 on six hits while walking five, hitting one batter and striking out two.<\/p>\n
Blue Jays starter Max Drew took the loss, giving up four runs \u2013 all earned \u2013 on seven hits in five innings. He walked four, hit two batters and struck out three.<\/p>\n
Quakertown ends its season at 24-9.
