Wheelchair tennis camp brings players together in Pittsburgh<\/p>\n

Mellon Park Tennis Center in Shadyside was serving up some inclusivity in Pittsburgh over the weekend.<\/p>\n

The center played host to a wheelchair tennis camp that brought together wheelchair athletes of all skill levels for some instruction and competitive play as part of Disability Pride Month.<\/p>\n

This year, the United States Tennis Association is celebrating 50 years of wheelchair tennis.<\/p>\n

“I’m teaching the tennis, but the athletes are teaching me about themselves and their disability, and the whole culture around disability and disability sports, so it’s really a two-way street when we are coming together to help an athlete be successful,” USTA wheelchair tennis coach Gabby Hesse said.<\/p>\n

“A wonderful opportunity for individuals to learn more about wheelchair tennis,” USTA adaptive tennis coordinator Katie Miness said. “We have some intermediate players, some advanced players and some people who have never played wheelchair tennis before, some people who don’t even use a wheelchair, and they are here trying it out.”<\/p>\n
