Foundation for Delaware County welcomes new board members<\/p>\n
The Foundation for Delaware County announced the election of Ronald Gern and Tuan Nguyen to the Foundation\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n

Gern is a retired lawyer with a proven track record as a leader.\u00a0 He is a nationally recognized expert with shopping centers and multiple other classes of real estate and infrastructure assets.<\/p>\n
He has served as a senior executive leader and general counsel for two privately held real estate companies and a publicly held Fortune 500 REIT, as well as as a lender-designated board member for the long-term concession that operated over 9,000 parking spaces in Chicago.<\/p>\n
Gern graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with undergraduate degrees from the Wharton School and the College of Arts and Sciences. He received his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.<\/p>\n

Nguyen is managing director and private advisor at Rockefeller Capital Management. He is responsible for helping to lead efforts in the Mid-Atlantic Region by closely advising families in all aspects of their financial life. As a senior client advisor, he is a steward of his clients\u2019 family wealth and values for their future generations.<\/p>\n
Nguyen serves on the Board of Winrock International and the Corporate Advisory Council at the Barnes Foundation, as well as the Advisory Boards of Summer Search Philadelphia, The Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia, The Asian Arts Initiative, and the Asian American Studies Scholarship at the University of Maryland College Park. Nguyen earned a bachelor\u2019s in economics from the University of Maryland College Park.<\/p>\n
In addition, the foundation announced the reappointment of its officers to its Board of Directors. The following community leaders will continue to lead the largest philanthropy in Delaware County: Michael Magnavita, chair; Kelly Thornton, vice chair; Mia Mendoza, secretary; and Ted Peters, treasurer.<\/p>\n
Magnavita is the former President and CEO of Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union. Thornton is a recently retired partner in the Philadelphia office of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Mendoza is the founder, CEO and senior strategist for the Mendoza Group. Peters is chairman and CEO of Bluestone Financial Institutions Fund and former chairman and CEO of Bryn Mawr Bank Corporation and the Bryn Mawr Trust Co.<\/p>\n

Everyone is welcome.<\/p>\n Over 100 students interned in county government<\/p>\n Delaware County hosted its 2026 Internship Culmination Ceremony on Thursday, capping off a successful season of learning, collaboration and hands-on government experience for local students.<\/p>\n The county welcomed 107 interns this summer, the largest group in the program\u2019s history, representing a diverse group of educational institutions from across the region. These students were placed throughout 25 county departments, from Human Resources, IT, and the Office of Sustainability to the District Attorney\u2019s Office, Medical Examiner and Register of Wills. The students logged over 20,000 hours of service.<\/p>\n The program, which runs from late May through early August, offered students more than just resume-building experience.<\/p>\n Interns gained hands-on experience in their fields of study, engaged the community, and worked alongside Delaware County\u2019s workforce to serve residents.<\/p>\n According to a press release from the County government, interns left with a bevy of professional connections, a deeper understanding of public service, and the privilege of serving their community.<\/p>\n Thursday\u2019s ceremony brought together council members, interns, department directors, and county leaders to reflect on the summer\u2019s achievements. Interns shared their work, lessons learned, and impact of their experiences. District Attorney Tanner Rouse served as the keynote speaker, sharing insights into his journey from intern at the Philadelphia DA\u2019s Office to the chief prosecutor for the fifth largest county in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n Applications for the 2027 Summer Internship Program will start being accepted early next year, with details and application materials expected to be posted online in early January.<\/p>\n For more information, visit\u00a0http:\/\/delcopa.gov\/employment\/internprogram.<\/a><\/p>\n Master Watershed Steward fundraiser offers native trees and shrubs<\/p>\n Penn State Extension\u2019s Master Watershed Steward program will hold its seventh annual native tree and shrub sale this fall with 25 pickup locations across the state.<\/p>\n Funds from the sale will support regional Master Watershed Steward volunteer activities, including stream repair projects, tree plantings and education programs.<\/p>\n This year\u2019s fundraiser features one native woody vine species and 23 native tree and shrub varieties, including the highly requested pawpaw and persimmon.<\/p>\n Master Watershed Stewards will accept orders through Tuesday, Aug. 25 or until supplies run out, with curbside pickup available on Friday, Sept. 18 at Smedley Park in Delaware County and Saturday, Sept. 19 at Hibernia Park in Chester County.<\/p>\n Pickups for other counties are on different dates and locations.<\/p>\n Native plants offer a variety of benefits to communities, including environmental, social and even economic benefits, program leaders noted. Native trees, shrubs and other plants improve air and water quality, reduce stormwater runoff and pollution, and enrich and enhance property and enjoyment.<\/p>\n Master Watershed Stewards plant trees to intercept and infiltrate stormwater, stabilize soils, and filter pollutants. Whether residents seek trees for privacy, foliage, shade, pollinator attraction or a beautiful landscape, the sale offers a variety of trees and shrubs to meet a wide range of needs.<\/p>\n Trees and shrubs will be available in gallon pots for $25, two-gallon pots for $35, or three-gallon pots for $45. Species sold in one-, two- and three-gallon pots also will be available as bundles of three for a reduced price.<\/p>\n New this year, two species sold as container seedlings will be available for purchase, sold in bundles of 5 for $50.<\/p>\n Organizers encourage residents to consider above- and below-ground utilities and mature growth size when choosing a tree for their property and always to call 811 before digging. Details about each tree, such as average mature height, sun and soil moisture requirements, and bloom time, are outlined on the order website.<\/p>\n Master Watershed Stewards guarantee a healthy specimen at pickup. Due to variations in planting, site conditions and care, no guarantees or refunds are possible after tree pickup.<\/p>\n Orders can be placed online or by phone at 877-345-0691 for curbside pickup in the fall. Customer service hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. All items must be pre-ordered. Plants will not be available for purchase at pickup sites.<\/p>\n Buyers can browse available sale items in the tree and shrub catalog, which includes photos and detailed descriptions. Once the plants are chosen, they can click the \u201cOrder Now\u201d button at the top of the page to purchase, and then complete the tree and shrub order form, selecting the quantities of each item desired for purchase. They then choose the most convenient pickup location and date. To complete the order, buyers should provide payment and submit the form.<\/p>\n To get the discounted price for single-species bundles of three plants, customers must purchase them as bundles.
