\n Man to pedal for 24 hours for FOXG1 campaign\n <\/p>\n

PITTSBURGH \u2014 On a crisp Wednesday morning, July 29, a 70-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, was geared up at Point State Park for what will be the longest bike ride of his life.<\/p>\n

Warren Wiebe was joined by his family at 10 a.m as he took off for his planned 24-hour bike ride through the Great Allegheny Passage. The expedition is another addition to Wiebe\u2019s portfolio \u2014 he is no newbie to recreational sports.<\/p>\n

The ride<\/a> is a fundraising opportunity for research and treatment of FOXG1 syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that Wiebe\u2019s 2-year-old granddaughter, Elouise DeLibero, has.<\/p>\n

The neurodevelopmental condition manifests through many health problems, including delayed brain development, involuntary motion and seizures.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to FOXG1 Research Foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just so excited because we love (Elouise) so much,\u201d Beth DeLibero, Elouise\u2019s grandmother, said.<\/p>\n

Beth, who has 15 grandchildren, recalled how Elouise partakes in Christmas plays her grandchildren put together, moving around with her walker. \u201cShe\u2019s part of our group,\u201d Beth said.<\/p>\n

The hours leading up<\/p>\n

Before taking off on his journey, Wiebe said he was feeling good about his training and preparation leading up to the ride.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like this is doable,\u201d Wiebe said. While he has been switching back and forth between thinking the ride will be fairly easy or really difficult, he said he is confident that \u201cit’s going to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wiebe, who spent the last two days resting and loading up on carbohydrates, said the hours building up to the ride involved calming himself mentally and making certain he was ready with the necessary equipment and nutrition.<\/p>\n

Warren planned to bike slightly uphill away from the city for about 12 hours. He planned to turn around either at the eastern Continental Divide or sooner, and return to the city.<\/p>\n

All kinds of support<\/p>\n

Elouise was among the crowd gathered to cheer on Wiebe, which also included her parents, Michael and Tegan DeLibero; her older sister, Mabel DeLibero; her younger brother, Boaz DeLibero; her uncle, Tyler Wiebe; and her grandmothers, Beth DeLibero and Sandy Wiebe.<\/p>\n

Mabel joined her grandfather for a small stretch at the start of the ride to show support, but that\u2019s not where the backing for Warren stops.<\/p>\n

His wife, Sandy, and his son, Tyler, planned to accompany him on the road parallel to his route, Warren said. Sandy and Tyler also plan to take turns joining Warren on the bike at some stretches on the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to go as far as I think I can go,\u201d said Tyler, who started the ride on a bike along with Warren. \u201cAt night, I\u2019ll be in the vehicle, waiting for him at the next stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

A park representative saw a Facebook post about the bike ride and reached out to offer support.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a lady who lives on the trail reach out and offer accommodation overnight for my support team,\u201d Warren said. \u201cIt\u2019s been tremendous \u2014 a lot of support.\u201d<\/p>\n
