Leading into the fall season, BoCoPreps.com will look into four storylines we hope to see play out to in each sport. To start off our 2026 edition, we\u2019re examining what may come to pass in boys cross country.<\/p>\n

Storyline one: What will Niwot look like without last year\u2019s senior class?<\/p>\n

For the past few seasons, since its move up to Class 5A, Niwot boys country has been, well,\u00a0legendary.\u00a0The three-time state champions \u2014 dating back to 2024, mind you \u2014 haven\u2019t just been winning. They\u2019ve been dominating.<\/p>\n

In the waning days of 2024, the Cougars won the first-ever Nike Cross Nationals title for a team out of Colorado. A month later, in a surprise rally at the school<\/a>, Nike Global Running head coach Chris Bennett described them as \u201cone of the greatest programs in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are just over 27,000 high schools in the United States,\u201d he added. \u201cThere are over 500,000 athletes that do cross country. The boys\u2019 field here at the national championships in Portland, Ore., in early December had 32 state championship teams, 70 individual state championship runners. It was the deepest field ever assembled.\u201d<\/p>\n

They then defended that title<\/a> in December of 2025. Last year, the Cougars won the state meet with a jaw-dropping 28 points to beat out second-place Erie by 113. But that success came with a caveat. The team was extremely senior-heavy.<\/p>\n

Front and center was Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year<\/a> Hunter Robbie, who took individual state runner-up. Behind him were then-seniors Ryder Keeton (seventh), Gabriel Marshall (10th) and Rocco Culpepper (37th). The good new for the Cougars is that now-senior Quinn Sullivan (third), sophomore Jude Ritzenhein (sixth) and senior Garrett Sherrard (35th) are all eligible to return.<\/p>\n

Storyline two: Just how high is Erie\u2019s ceiling?<\/p>\n

While last year\u2019s theme at the state meet panned out as \u201cNiwot and no one,\u201d Erie emerged as the front runner among the rest of the teams in the field.<\/p>\n

Behind Niwot, the Tigers soared to state runner-up, clocking 141 points edge Castle View\u2019s 152.\u00a0And that\u2019s not even the best part.<\/p>\n

The Tigers are set to return all but one of their state competitors, with only front runner Reid O\u2019Brien (14th) hitting the transfer portal to college. Now-seniors Brett Michalski (15th), Micah Anderson (34th), junior Sam Snyder (42nd), senior Braden Kennedy (53rd), and juniors Levi Kitlowski (56th) and Cade Simonson (57th) could all come back and be dangerous as ever.<\/p>\n

Storyline three: Does Mead\u2019s Josh Knight have an individual title coming his way?<\/p>\n

During last year\u2019s 4A state meet, Josh Knight was a bit of a surprise guest on the podium. Before the race, he held the No. 23 seed, but a 50-second PR had him flying all the way into fourth place<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is really upping my confidence,\u201d Knight told BoCoPreps.com at the time. \u201cI\u2019m going to put in a lot harder work, and maybe, who knows what could happen next year? I was thinking to myself, \u2018Is my kick good enough? Is someone going to come up right next to me?\u2019 I learned this from my former teammate, Ben Mayer, to watch shadows behind me to see if someone\u2019s creeping up on me. I just kept going every time I saw a shadow.\u201d<\/p>\n

His official time, by race\u2019s end, was 15 minutes, 43.1 seconds, which was good enough for fourth place. Two of the three shadows he was chasing \u2014 Eagle Valley\u2019s Dylan Blair and Coronado\u2019s Xzavier Campos \u2014 both graduated. Only the state champion, Coronado\u2019s Oliver Horton, is returning for another season.<\/p>\n

Storyline four: What will Boulder look like this upcoming season?<\/p>\n

In the past couple of Class 5A state meets, Boulder\u2019s boys have asserted themselves as one of the best teams in the classification. In 2025, that meant fourth place, when the Panthers scored 174 points.<\/p>\n

That, however, comes with a massive caveat for the upcoming fall season. Of the top five scorers, only one will return. Then senior Lucas Wik led the way with 12th place, followed by Cooper Draves (24th), Ulysses Paulsrud (59th) and Toby Wong (62nd).<\/p>\n

Only Jack Rhodes (39th), now a senior, will come back from that scoring bunch.
