SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 Traffic is once again flowing between West and South Scranton after the reopening of the newly replaced Elm Street Bridge.<\/p>\n
Mayor Paige Cognetti and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 4 Executive Jonathan Eboli announced Friday that the Elm Street Bridge replacement project has been completed.<\/p>\n
The bridge, which carries traffic between West and South Scranton, closed on Feb. 3, 2025, for a full bridge replacement and remained shut down for about 18 months. During construction, motorists followed a 1.2-mile detour while a temporary pedestrian bridge maintained access across the corridor.<\/p>\n
The project also affected access to the Elm Street trailhead of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Trail. Parking for the trail is located on the west side of West Elm Street near 201 W. Elm St., where the trail heads toward Taylor.<\/p>\n
The Elm Street Bridge is one of four structures included in PennDOT’s Scranton Local Bridge Project. The Parker Street Bridge reopened earlier this year, while work continues on the North Main Avenue Bridge, which closed in January, and the West Lackawanna Avenue Bridge.<\/p>\n
City and PennDOT officials said reopening the bridge restores an important connection between neighborhoods and marks another milestone in the long-term effort to modernize Scranton’s aging bridge infrastructure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO.
