\u201cMusic student performances at Musikfest are always a crowd-pleaser,\u201d says Rosemary Murdy-Haber, a member of the Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association (LVMTA), adding, \u201cIt\u2019s such a joy seeing and hearing these student performances on piano, violin and voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association \u201cMusikfest Recital\u201d is 5:30 p.m. Aug. 2; Musikfest Caf\u00e9, ArtsQuest Center, SteelStacks, Bethlehem.<\/p>\n
Student performers are recommended by their LVMTA music teachers and selected by audition.<\/p>\n
Says Murdy-Haber, \u201cThis year, we have nine music studios represented by 25 students who have such amazing talent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Selections range from Irving Berlin\u2019s \u201cI\u2019ve Got the Sun in the Morning\u201d to \u201cSomeone Like You\u201d from the 1990 musical \u201cJekyll & Hyde,\u201d \u201cJourney to the Past\u201d from the film \u201cAnastasia\u201d and the spooky and mysterious Martha Mier tune \u201cThe Midnight Horseman.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several of the classical works include Johannes Brahms\u2019 \u201cIntermezzo in A minor, Op. 76 No. 7,\u201d Frederic Chopin\u2019s \u201cMazurka in G minor Op. 67 No. 2,\u201d Maurice Ravel\u2019s elegant masterwork \u201cSonatine: I. Modere\u201d and Alan Hovhaness\u2019 dynamic \u201cMacedonian Mountain Dance.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been chairperson for this LVMTA event since 2012, hosting this event so our talented students can showcase what they have learned from our professional team of music educators,\u201d says Murdy-Haber.<\/p>\n
\u201cMusic is a gift. It\u2019s a lifetime sport. No one gets benched. Everyone gets a chance to play,\u201d Murdy-Haber says.<\/p>\n

The Bethlehem Municipal Band presents a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 9, Bethlehem Rose Garden, Bethlehem.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor this concert, we provide our audience an eclectic selection of music, including traditional band pieces, film music as well as lesser-known works,\u201d says David Crosby, Director of the Bethlehem Municipal Band.<\/p>\n
Leroy Anderson composed three equestrian-themed pieces, including \u201cThe Old Horse and Buggy,\u201d depicting an old-time leisurely ride in the countryside.<\/p>\n
Says Crosby, \u201cLeroy Anderson is an American treasure, and was responsible for giving the modern symphonic band its own repertoire before we even had one.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of his music was written for The Boston Pops Orchestra when Arthur Fiedler was their music director. I am so glad that his music has been able to live on for so many years, making him a staple in community band programs all over the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Jay Dawson arrangement of \u201cTennessee Salute\u201d includes \u201cWabash Cannonball,\u201d \u201cTennessee Waltz\u201d and \u201cRocky Top.\u201d John Towner Williams fans will enjoy selections from \u201cSuperman.\u201d<\/p>\n
No band concert is complete without a John Philip Sousa march. Sousa, an avid equestrian, composed \u201cThe Black Horse Troop\u201d to honor Troop A of the Cleveland, Ohio, National Guard. Sousa conducted the work\u2019s debut in 1925 at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland with cavalry troops riding their horses directly onto the stage to stand behind the band.<\/p>\n
