WHYY Philadelphia has finalized the deal to acquire WPSU and filed it with the FCC nine months after agreeing to buy Penn State\u2019s broadcast properties, according to Radio Insight<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WHYY is set to pay $1 million for Public News\/Talk\/Classical 91.5 WPSU-FM and PBS affiliate WPSU-TV State College, as well as WPSU-FM simulcasters 90.1 WPSX Kane, 92.1 W221BD Dubois, 100.9 W265BB Bradford, 102.5 W273BE Huntingdon, 104.7 W284AK Clearfield, and 106.7 W294AE Altoona.<\/p>\n

WHYY plans to work with the Bellisario College of Communications to continue to provide educational resources to students within a year of closing the deal. <\/p>\n

Penn State will also continue to run the student-led \u201c90.7 The Lion\u201d WKPS State College.<\/p>\n

\u201cWHYY has been a thoughtful partner. Their leadership has agreed to continue to operate WPSU for at least three years following the sale closing, which is expected to occur by June 30, 2026,\u201d Penn State Senior Vice President for Finance and Business\/Treasurer Sara Thorndike said. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll current WPSU employees will have an opportunity to interview for potential roles at the new station. Further, we are very pleased the stations will continue to offer our Bellisario College of Communications students real-world experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

After initially voting against the deal, the Board of Trustees has since unanimously approved<\/a> the transfer of Public News\/Talk\/Classical 91.5 WPSU-FM and PBS affiliate WPSU-TV State College, PA to WHYY Philadelphia without the subsidies.<\/p>\n

This vote came a month after the board\u00a0originally voted down the offer to sell WPSU<\/a>\u00a0to WHYY, where the University\u00a0would have to pay a $17 million subsidy over the next five years. <\/p>\n

WPSU began as a radio station in 1953 and added TV coverage in 1965, but was set to enter a wind-down plan and fully shut down by June 2026 until the Board of Trustees reversed its decision. <\/p>\n
