Among LeBron James\u2019 greatest fears is failure. In 2013, he was interviewed by ESPN<\/a> after two championships and two Finals MVPs. He told them that being the greatest of all-time was his goal. At that moment in his career he was arguably one of the most physically dominant players in the NBA and said he wanted to wring everything out of what he had while it lasted. He said he didn\u2019t want his legacy to be that of purely a scorer. Winning is what was driving him. More so: winning surrounded by brotherhood is what would fulfill him. <\/p>\n \u201cI want to succeed so bad that I become afraid of failing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n That fear has followed him ever since. To manage the fear, LeBron built systems around his body: diet, a recovery routine, strength and conditioning program, and a hyperbaric chamber<\/a>. He also hired<\/a> personal athletic trainer, Mike Mancias, to focus on pre-game preparation, strength training and post-game recovery. For at least 20 years this framework has been successful. LeBron was able to stay healthy and win (he boasts a winning record of 64 percent in regular season). <\/p>\n LeBron\u2019s Last Contract And The Uncertainty Ahead in Philadelphia <\/p>\n LeBron recently announced<\/a> his last contract will be in Philadelphia: two years at $8 million, a veteran\u2019s minimum. Basketball pundits were caught off guard; beat reporters were left reeling. The trouble many had with the decision was that LeBron had three perfectly reasonable options on the table: Cleveland, where he could have staged a final homecoming, or Miami, which made him the player he became. And then there was the Golden State Warriors and the chance to team up with superstar Steph Curry. <\/p>\n Philadelphia offered him none of those things. There was no emotional pull. Just a chance to win a championship given that the Sixers made it to the second round<\/a> of last season\u2019s playoffs but succumbed to the eventual champions the Knicks in a series sweep. There’s also a fanbase there with a reputation for having zero patience and even less interest in what this final stand may mean for LeBron. They won’t care that this is his last lap. They want a championship. But, he picked Philly anyway.<\/p>\n But this next step in Philadelphia will be the first time he\u2019s walking into a locker room laced with uncertainty. His own aging body aside, Philly\u2019s best talent Joel Embiid has only played 96 games in the last three years; in his 10-year career the most he\u2019s played in a season is 68 and he\u2019s only reached above 60 on four occasions. And he\u2019s yet to see how this team will work together with new addition Jaylen Brown alongside Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe. On any given night the Sixers could be a juggernaut or a complete dumpster fire. <\/p>\n For his last chapter LeBron did as he always has done and controlled his own path ahead, keeping NBA Commissioner Adam Silver waiting<\/a>; the NBA scheduling was put on hold until he made his decision. LeBron can continue to control how he trains this summer, what he eats, how he recovers, and how he fits in with his new teammates. The uncertainty lies with what his body will do once the bash and crash of the season gets moving. How long will it take him to come back from a tweak, a fall, a bad landing? What about a random soft tissue injury picked from a training session? Everything about being 41 is slower: healing, movement, reaction time. He can lean on his meticulous preparation, sure, but the reality is his age has already caught up with him. And he can\u2019t beat science. <\/p>\n In recent years we\u2019ve seen LeBron re-coding his own game to match the limits of what his body can do. The isolation possessions that defined him have mostly disappeared; he drives to the rim less every season. His profile these days is less about attack, is more thoughtful and not as exciting: catch-and-shoot chances from assisted passes, screens, spot-ups above the arc, putbacks created out of traffic. It’s a version of exactly what he wanted to be remembered for and that is someone who could do a little bit of everything. <\/p>\n It wasn’t that long ago that his age wasn\u2019t talked about at all that much. LeBron’s last heroic triumph came in the Orlando bubble in 2020: a title win over Miami, a fourth Finals MVP which puts him second all-time behind Michael Jordan who has six. On top of that he averaged 29.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists across six games, shooting with incredible efficiency at 59.1<\/a> percent from the field and 41.6 percent from long range. <\/p>\n Even over the last six years as LeBron peeled back his game to pick his moments and evolve into an elite role player, his body has steadily been in decline. <\/p>\n The Moment In LeBron\u2019s Career When Injuries Became A Factor <\/p>\n The real turn for LeBron, when we started to see the first wave of injuries, started two years before the Bubble title. In 2018, during his first season with the Lakers, in a match against Golden State, he slipped, felt something in his groin pop and missed the next 17 games. It was the first real dent in an otherwise durable career. Prior to that, across parts of fifteen seasons<\/a>, he’d missed just 71 games total. <\/p>\n Then, in March 2021, Atlanta’s Solomon Hill rolled into his ankle on a routine play and LeBron suffered a high ankle sprain. He missed 21 games \u2013 26 of the Lakers’ final 30 that season. His foot and ankle never quite recovered<\/a>. LeBron then started to collect multiple ailments: abdominal strain, left knee swelling, more ankle soreness. In 2023 he tore a tendon<\/a> in his right foot, missed 13 games and went against the advice to get season-ending surgery. The Lakers were swept by the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals. <\/p>\n In 2025, for the first time in 21 years<\/a>, LeBron skipped All-Star Weekend because of ankle and foot soreness. A few months later he suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain<\/a> against Minnesota, the first knee injury of his career. It locked up on contact and required off-season surgery. LeBron also missed the entire 2025-26 pre-season and the first 14 games with an irritated sciatica, with nerve pain radiating from a herniated disc down the leg. Then came an elbow contusion and left foot arthritis. <\/p>\n Popular belief in the NBA has it that once a player hits his early thirties, you are in decline. LeBron has now outlasted that by more than a decade. But four structural injuries to four different parts of his body \u2014 groin, ankle, foot, knee \u2014 in seven years, on top of a nerve condition, suggest even his elite training and recovery has limits. The league moves faster now. LeBron has an aging body that needs to reset and recover constantly just to keep up. <\/p>\n Almost nobody plays at an elite level into their forties, and the ones who try rarely make it look good. You stop watching for the explosiveness and start applauding the things like mid-range touch, smart reads, and connective passing. The kid with the headband whose mixtape racked up millions of views on YouTube is long gone. What’s left is a much older version trying to win another championship. <\/p>\n For all his wins and the NBA records he holds, LeBron still has had enough failure in his career to remind us he is human. Even then, most of it came down to things he could fix like evolving his all-round game. Though, how he\u2019s played the game has never been a question mark.
