For more than a century, Potratz Floral has been a staple in Erie County, growing from a small family business into a trusted community institution. Founded in 1919, the floral and greenhouse operation is now in its fourth generation, marking 107 years of serving customers throughout the region.<\/p>\n
The roots of the business trace back to Germany, where the original Potratz family plant originated. The founder, Mr. Herman Potratz, brought his passion and vision to Erie, establishing what would become one of the area’s most recognizable floral businesses along Buffalo Road.<\/p>\n
Today, that legacy continues through his grandchildren, Janelle, Melody and Jim Potratz. Raised on the property and immersed in the family trade from an early age, the siblings developed into floral professionals dedicated to carrying on the traditions built by previous generations.<\/p>\n
Over the years, the business has overcome significant challenges. One of its toughest moments came during the Christmas season in the 1980s when a fire destroyed the main building. Despite the setback, the family kept the business operating from a nearby location while rebuilding and continuing to serve customers.<\/p>\n
Community involvement remains a central focus for Potratz Floral. The business has participated in local events such as the AHN Festival of Trees and helps customers celebrate life’s milestones, from weddings and anniversaries to memorial services and other special occasions.<\/p>\n
The operation extends far beyond the floral shop. Potratz Floral maintains a greenhouse featuring roughly 3,000 varieties of plants. Jim Potratz spends much of his time ensuring the plants remain healthy, caring for them seven days a week through watering, weeding and monitoring temperatures.<\/p>\n
Employees throughout the greenhouse work diligently to nurture plants of all sizes, from delicate seedlings to mature plants growing in larger areas behind the store. Their efforts help provide customers with a wide selection of flowers, plants and greenery year-round.<\/p>\n
In addition to retail floral services and frequent deliveries, Potratz Floral also cares for plants at local businesses and offers landscaping services, including tree and shrub planting as well as weed control.<\/p>\n
