<\/a>HARRISBURG, Pa. \u2014<\/p>\nPennsylvania Republicans have brought their “active” voter registration gap to a historic low, according to the latest voter registration figures released by the Pennsylvania Department of State.<\/p>\n
The state now has about 3.4 million active registered Democrats, just 25,811 more than active registered Republicans, according to the data. “Active” voters are those who have not missed voting or changed their registration in five years or two consecutive federal election cycles and election mail being returned as “undeliverable.”<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania Republican Party Executive Director James Markley credited years of voter outreach and registration efforts for the narrowing gap.<\/p>\n
“The movement that we’ve seen over the past decade, or for years even, has been massive,” Markley said. <\/p>\n
The latest figures also show nearly 1.29 million active voters registered as independents, third-party members or unaffiliated. Markley said those voters remain a key focus for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.<\/p>\n
“I think it’s a clear choice for independent voters which side has their best interests at heart,” Markley said. <\/p>\n
However, political analysts caution that the overall registration totals do not tell the entire story.<\/p>\n
Berwood Yost, director of the Floyd Institute for Public Policy at Franklin & Marshall College, said party-switching trends this year favor Democrats. About 37,000 voters have switched to the Democratic Party in 2026, compared with more than 24,000 who have switched to the Republican Party.<\/p>\n
Yost said those changes may reflect public reaction to the current presidential administration.<\/p>\n
