DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 The Greater Scranton YMCA launched its annual Summer Clothing Drive on Monday, beginning a two-week effort to collect and distribute clothing for local individuals and families in need.<\/p>\n
The YMCA is accepting new or clean, gently used clothing for children and adults through Friday, Aug. 7, at 706 N. Blakely St. in Dunmore. Donations may include clothing for all ages, sizes and seasons.<\/p>\n
Colleen Burns Ecklund, director of marketing and development for the Greater Scranton YMCA, said the drive was organized to help families manage seasonal expenses while giving usable clothing a second life.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe found that August can be a really tough month financially for families and teachers. A lot of people are feeling the strain of the back-to-school season, so we want to help out any way we can. We believe a clothing drive with new and gently used clothing is a great way to do that while also promoting sustainability and community-centered giving,\u201d said Ecklund.<\/p>\n
Organizers said that while all clothing is being accepted, children\u2019s clothing is among the greatest needs, especially items for children from birth to age 5 and for school-age children. Donations can be dropped off during the facility\u2019s business hours through Friday.<\/p>\n
YMCA staff will sort and organize the donated clothing over the weekend. Distribution will begin Monday, Aug. 10, and continue through Thursday, Aug. 13.<\/p>\n
The clothing will be displayed in the YMCA lobby, where anyone can choose what they need for themselves or their families. No registration will be required.<\/p>\n
The YMCA said the drive is open to the entire community and is intended to provide practical support ahead of the school year while encouraging residents to reuse clothing that remains in good condition.<\/p>\n
