Crews with Pavement Technology Incorporated are applying a product called Reclamite to recently paved streets as part of Erie’s pavement preservation program.<\/p>\n

Officials compare it to routine maintenance on a vehicle, saying the treatment restores oils lost over time and helps extend the life of the asphalt while delaying more expensive repairs.<\/p>\n

“We’re putting a rejuvenated sealer on the road to help the road last longer,” said Thomas Donegan, a supervisor for Pavement Technology.<\/p>\n

Donegan also said the sealer absorbs into the asphalt and becomes a part of the road, in turn making it stronger and more water-resistant.<\/p>\n

City leaders said taking a preventative approach now could save taxpayers money by reducing the need for major road projects in the future.<\/p>\n

“We really like the results on roads that were like eight to nine years old that still had a lot of life to them, so putting some rejuvenator back down to try to save our roads, especially with the winter we have, anything we can do to extend the life to get the pavement to last longer to save tax dollars for sure,” said Jeff Gibbens, the city’s assistant director of public works.<\/p>\n

Residents who live on the selected streets will see the new preventative pavement treatment going on, but after a few hours, there should be no difference in the pavement.<\/p>\n

“Each road usually takes a half-hour to an hour and then they can drive on it freely,” Donegan said.<\/p>\n

“There is no difference whatsoever; you can’t feel anything because everything is absorbing into the asphalt, so it’s rejuvenating the oxidation. We picked roads that were between one and three years old because that’s what you want to use it on to try to extend the life of the road,” Gibbens said.<\/p>\n

40,000 square yards will be covered over in Reclamite.<\/p>\n
