{"id":259716,"date":"2026-08-05T15:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T15:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/259716\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T15:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T15:20:08","slug":"city-controller-investigation-finds-hundreds-of-philadelphia-property-owners-exploiting-tax-relief-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/259716\/","title":{"rendered":"City controller investigation finds hundreds of Philadelphia property owners exploiting tax relief program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 Philadelphia\u2019s city controller says the city and school district are losing millions of dollars in revenue from people who improperly claim a homestead exemption on their taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/services\/payments-assistance-taxes\/taxes\/property-and-real-estate-taxes\/get-real-estate-tax-relief\/get-the-homestead-exemption\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">homestead exemption<\/a> allows homeowners to deduct the first $100,000 of value from the tax bill for their primary residence, which reduces property taxes by about $1,400.<\/p>\n<p>However, Controller Christy Brady said her office\u2019s investigation found people taking the exemption on multiple properties, including businesses with rental properties and people who don\u2019t even live in the city. <\/p>\n<p>She estimates it\u2019s costing the city and school district about $11 million a year.<\/p>\n<p>Brady began investigating abuse of the homestead exemption two years ago. <\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia Revenue Department is now auditing all of the tax relief programs.
