Berks County communities are set to receive more than $3.2 million for a wide slate of intersection upgrades aimed at easing congestion and improving safety, part of a statewide push to modernize aging traffic signals.<\/p>\n
The funding comes through Pennsylvania\u2019s Green Light-Go program, which the Shapiro Administration says has now delivered $134 million in signal improvements since 2023. This year\u2019s round includes $38 million for 86 municipalities, with Berks securing some of the region\u2019s largest awards.<\/p>\n
The projects in Berks span busy commuter corridors, commercial hubs and neighborhood intersections \u2014 many of which have long needed updated equipment, improved detection or full signal retiming.<\/p>\n
The following is a breakdown of the Berks awards:<\/p>\n
Brecknock Township<\/p>\n
Brecknock will receive $181,912 to modernize the traffic signal at New Holland Road (Route 625) and Allegheny Drive (Route 568), a key junction for drivers moving between residential areas and the Route 222 corridor.<\/p>\n
Exeter Township<\/p>\n
Exeter secured $116,880 for a package of upgrades across several high-volume intersections along the Route 422 corridor, where aging signals and heavy traffic often combine to slow peak-hour flow:<\/p>\n
\u2022 St. Lawrence Avenue and Shelbourne Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Perkiomen Avenue (Business 422) at 37th Street and Gibraltar Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ben Franklin Highway at Lorane Road, Shelbourne Road, Lincoln Road and Perkiomen Avenue<\/p>\n
Reading<\/p>\n
The city will receive $251,390 to modernize signals at three intersections that see steady daily vehicular traffic and frequent foot traffic:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Schuylkill Avenue and Buttonwood Street<\/p>\n
\u2022 North Ninth Street and Walnut Street<\/p>\n
\u2022 South Third Street and Franklin Street<\/p>\n
Robeson Township<\/p>\n
Robeson was awarded $203,501 for safety and signal upgrades at multiple intersection along Route 724 in Gibraltar:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Main Street (Route 724) and Green Hill Road (Route 568)\/Old River Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Route 724 at Old Gilbraltar Road and at Gibraltar Road and Old River Road<\/p>\n
St. Lawrence<\/p>\n
The borough will use $278,680 to upgrade signal equipment at Perkiomen Avenue and St. Lawrence Avenue, a busy point along the Route 422 business corridor.<\/p>\n
Spring Township<\/p>\n
Spring received one of the largest awards in Pennsylvania at $1,028,616 for a sweeping modernization effort across more than two dozen intersections. The work covers major commercial and commuter routes:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Fritztown Road and Old Fritztown Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Shillington Road at multiple connecting streets<\/p>\n
\u2022 Route 222 ramps<\/p>\n
\u2022 State Hill Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Paper Mill Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Broadcasting Road<\/p>\n
\u2022 Meridian Boulevard<\/p>\n
\u2022 Numerous intersections serving the Broadcasting Square retail district<\/p>\n
West Reading<\/p>\n
The borough will receive $219,672 to upgrade the signal at Eighth Avenue and Hill Avenue\/Reading Avenue, a key intersection near residential neighborhoods and local businesses.<\/p>\n
PennDOT says the Green Light-Go program reimburses municipalities for projects that improve the efficiency of existing signals \u2014 everything from LED conversions and retiming to modern detection systems and pedestrian upgrades. More than 1,700 signals have been improved since 2023.<\/p>\n
PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said the program is designed to deliver results for communities by reducing congestion and improving safety.<\/p>\n
