The show hadn\u2019t officially started, yet \u201cWeird Al\u201d Yankovic was already in the middle of the crowd.<\/p>\n
As the opening notes of \u201cTacky,\u201d his parody of Pharrell Williams\u2019 \u201cHappy,\u201d filled the air Tuesday night at Musikfest in Bethlehem, fans immediately realized this wasn\u2019t going to be your typical concert. Phones shot into the air, people leaned over the barricades hoping for a high-five, and Al casually made his way through the audience singing as if he were walking through his own neighborhood. It was the perfect way to kick off a night that celebrated everything fans have loved about Weird Al for more than four decades.<\/p>\n
As a 48-year-old who grew up in the era of MTV, cassette tapes, and trying to record songs off the radio without the DJ talking over the intro, seeing Weird Al live felt like stepping into a time machine. His music was the soundtrack to awkward middle school years, family road trips, and countless afternoons spent laughing with friends. Looking around Tuesday night, I realized I wasn\u2019t the only one reliving those memories. There were plenty of people my age, but there were also parents introducing their kids to the music they grew up on. That\u2019s something very few artists can say after more than 40 years.<\/p>\n
Mother Nature couldn\u2019t have planned a better evening. The weather was absolutely perfect, making for one of those summer nights where you almost forget you\u2019re standing shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of people. Before the show even started, the crowd had become part of the entertainment. Everywhere I looked were loud Hawaiian shirts, curly wigs, fake mustaches, accordions, and every Weird Al-inspired outfit imaginable. It wasn\u2019t just a concert; it felt like a reunion of people who all grew up laughing at the same songs.<\/p>\n
Following an entertaining opening set from Puddles Pity Party, Weird Al launched into a career-spanning set that reminded everyone exactly why he\u2019s still one of the most unique entertainers touring today. From newer songs like \u201cMission Statement\u201d and \u201cPolkamania!\u201d to classics like \u201cLike a Surgeon\u201d (Madonna\u2019s \u201cLike a Virgin\u201d), \u201cEat It\u201d (Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cBeat It\u201d), \u201cAmish Paradise\u201d (Coolio\u2019s \u201cGangsta\u2019s Paradise\u201d), \u201cWhite & Nerdy\u201d (Chamillionaire\u2019s \u201cRidin\u2019\u201d), \u201cFat\u201d (Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cBad\u201d), \u201cSmells Like Nirvana\u201d (Nirvana\u2019s \u201cSmells Like Teen Spirit\u201d), \u201cThe Saga Begins\u201d (Don McLean\u2019s \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d) and the encore, \u201cYoda,\u201d based on The Kinks\u2019 \u201cLola,\u201d it was hit after hit for fans who have followed him through the decades.<\/p>\n
One of the biggest surprises of the night came during \u201cPolkamania!\u201d While performing one of his newest songs, Al reached into his pants and stripped off (what looked like) a pair of fake Dungeon Crawler Carl boxer shorts underneath, earning one of the biggest laughs of the evening. The song itself was a huge hit with the audience, proving that even after all these years, Weird Al is still finding new ways to connect with fans.<\/p>\n
The production was exactly what you\u2019d expect from a tour called Bigger & Weirder. Giant LED screens, elaborate costumes, lighting that perfectly matched each song, and unbelievably quick costume changes kept the show moving at a relentless pace. Between songs, the giant screens featured hilarious interview clips from throughout Al\u2019s career where he playfully poked fun at celebrities like Madonna and Sting. They weren\u2019t just time-fillers while he changed costumes; they reminded everyone that Weird Al has spent decades becoming a pop culture icon himself.<\/p>\n
At one point during the evening, Al looked out over the crowd and smiled before saying, \u201cI don\u2019t play Bethlehem often.\u201d Judging by the roar that followed, the audience was more than happy to remind him just how welcome he is here.<\/p>\n
What has always impressed me most about Weird Al, though, isn\u2019t just the comedy. It\u2019s the talent.<\/p>\n
His longtime band is phenomenal. Every parody depends on faithfully recreating the original song before adding Al\u2019s hilarious lyrics, and they absolutely nailed it. Whether they were channeling Nirvana\u2019s grunge, Michael Jackson\u2019s polished pop, Madonna\u2019s dance hits, or hip-hop beats, they switched genres effortlessly. It\u2019s easy to laugh your way through the show and forget you\u2019re listening to some seriously talented musicians. Al added five more musicians to this tour as opposed to his other more intimate tours in the past, providing even more of a spectacle including a saxophone solo.<\/p>\n
People often forget what a great vocalist he really is because they\u2019re too busy laughing. One of my favorite moments came when he sang \u201cYou Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman.\u201d His voice was so spot-on that, for a moment, you almost forgot you were watching a parody artist. Throughout the night he effortlessly shifted from Kurt Cobain\u2019s unmistakable growl to Michael Jackson\u2019s signature style and even the rapid-fire delivery of \u201cWhite & Nerdy.\u201d His ability to imitate the artists he\u2019s parodying is honestly one of the reasons his songs have stood the test of time.<\/p>\n
As for the crowd, a few songs completely stole the show.<\/p>\n
When \u201cSmells Like Nirvana\u201d began and Weird Al walked onstage dressed exactly like Kurt Cobain, the place exploded. For anyone who lived through the grunge era, it was impossible not to smile. The outfit was perfect, the voice was dead-on, and suddenly it felt like I was back in the early \u201990s watching MTV after school.<\/p>\n
When they played \u201cFat,\u201d Al donned the legendary oversized fat suit. It\u2019s one thing to remember the music video from decades ago \u2014 it\u2019s another to see it come to life right in front of you. The audience loved every second of it.<\/p>\n
How do I describe the song \u201cWhite & Nerdy,\u201d and how the crowd somehow got even louder? Everyone around me seemed to know every single word, rapping along and laughing through the entire song. It was easily one of the biggest singalongs of the night.<\/p>\n
But nothing topped the encore.<\/p>\n
As soon as \u201cYoda\u201d started, thousands of voices joined together without missing a beat. Watching several generations singing those lyrics together was one of those moments that reminded me why concerts matter. For a few minutes, nobody was looking at work emails or worrying about tomorrow. We were just kids again, laughing at songs we\u2019ve loved for decades.<\/p>\n
At 66 years old, Weird Al is still sprinting across the stage, changing costumes every few minutes, interacting with fans, and somehow never running out of energy. That\u2019s impressive no matter who you are. He\u2019s also long since outgrown the label of \u201cnovelty act.\u201d A five-time Grammy Award winner, Emmy winner, Hollywood Walk of Fame recipient, and the first comedy artist to debut an album at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Weird Al has earned his place in music history. The fact that so many of the artists he\u2019s parodied have embraced him over the years says everything you need to know about the respect he\u2019s earned.<\/p>\n
This is my second time seeing him on this tour, and I must say it was worth every minute. Walking out of Musikfest Tuesday night, surrounded by people still wearing Hawaiian shirts and quoting their favorite lyrics, I couldn\u2019t help but smile. For a couple of hours, life felt a little simpler. We laughed. We sang. We remembered where we were when these songs first became part of our lives.<\/p>\n
And maybe that\u2019s Weird Al\u2019s greatest accomplishment. He doesn\u2019t just parody music. He reminds us why we fell in love with it in the first place.<\/p>\n
