Clear some shelf space\u2014the Philadelphia Bookstore Crawl<\/a> is back this month.<\/p>\n

The event is set to return for its fourth year on Saturday, Aug. 22, bringing together nearly 60 independent bookstores across the city and surrounding suburbs for a day dedicated to celebrating literature<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the release puts it, the event, designed to feel like a citywide First Friday \u2014 only with bookstores instead of galleries \u2014 invites locals to create their own route, exploring as many participating shops as they can.<\/p>\n

Each stop offers something different: including author signings, creative programming, exclusive giveaways, discounts and special activations. Sponsoring publishers like Quarto, Abrams, Blackstone and Berkley are providing prizes at multiple locations, plus coworking space Indy Hall will kick off the day with a publishing industry event for aspiring writers as well.<\/p>\n

Readers will also have the chance to meet dozens of local and bestselling authors throughout the Crawl. This year’s lineup includes Jo Piazza, Brittney Morris, Timothy Janovsky, Jenni Walsh, Farah Naz Rishi, Donna Jo Napoli and Xio Axelrod, along with poets, illustrators and children’s authors appearing at stops across the region. Organizers say additional author appearances and programming will continue to be announced leading up to the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond the bookstore visits themselves, several special events are planned throughout the day. Main Point Books in Wayne will host the annual after-party, featuring a ticketed book foiling workshop with bestselling author Jo Piazza alongside a free community celebration. In South Philadelphia, Molly’s Books and Records<\/a> will once again host a poetry and small press fair outside the store, bringing together local writers, artists and independent presses for the afternoon.<\/p>\n

This year’s crawl also reflects the continued growth of the region’s independent bookstore scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The now annual event launched in 2023, and people came from all over the country to explore the city\u2019s literary scene. Two dozen Philly spots participated in the inaugural iteration, and years after, the list grew to include over 35 bookstores. This year is set to be even bigger.<\/p>\n

2026’s crawl also shines a spotlight on the region’s growing indie bookstore scene. New participants include Fingerprint Books<\/a> and Midsummer Books<\/a> \u2014 two recently opened shops sharing the Fishtown retail space Our Mutual Friend. Thrillerdelphia, Little Yenta Books, Whales & Windmills and Chapter Two Books are also making their Crawl debut, plus Capricorn Books and Cupid’s Bookshop will welcome visitors into their newly expanded locations.<\/p>\n

To make the experience even more interactive this year, participants can pick up an illustrated Philadelphia Bookstore Crawl passport at participating stores and collect stamps throughout the day. Philadelphia Stories will also operate a bookstore tour bus that visits five participating shops, and Doylestown Bookshop<\/a> will expand the fun with a three-day Dark Ink festival featuring bestselling horror and speculative fiction authors. The crawl also coincides with A Book A Day’s annual event at the Free Library of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
