OHIO COUNTY, W. Va. \u2014 With the first day of school approaching, families in Wheeling got a boost at the 36th annual Back to School Giveaway at the North Wheeling Dream Center.<\/p>\n
Bethlehem Apostolic Temple began its back-to-school outreach in 1990, and organizers said the mission has stayed the same for 36 years: helping families and making sure children have what they need for the first day of school. Cummings said the goal is to send students back to school with a smile and to let them know their community believes in them.<\/p>\n
Organizers said they were prepared to help as many as 500 young people, and families did not have to meet income or residency requirements to take part.<\/p>\n
Bishop Daryl Cummings of Bethlehem Apostolic Temple emphasized the role of community support in making the giveaway possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, from individuals to organizations to banks to all of them, our church is not one of the largest churches in the city. If anything, we\u2019re one of the smallest churches in the city. And so, without community support, this is not happening. I\u2019m glad to be the band director, but I\u2019m definitely not playing all the instruments. And so, this is a star for the Ohio Valley community,\u201d Cummings said.<\/p>\n
Cummings said the mission goes beyond putting school supplies into children\u2019s hands, and that after 36 years it remains focused on making sure local children know their community is behind them.<\/p>\n
