Perched along the Great Lake that shares its name, Erie County is home to 15 beaches and over a dozen marinas and boat launches across its 77 miles of Lake Erie shoreline. But while Lake Erie is by far the largest body of water in northwestern Pennsylvania, it’s certainly not the only destination for boaters and anglers in the area. Head about 15 miles south of Erie, and you’ll find the lesser-known Lake LeBoeuf, a 72-acre natural glacial lake that’s a favorite year-round fishing spot for locals.

Lake LeBoeuf is an open-system lake, meaning there are no dams blocking Trout Run, which feeds it from the north, or LeBoeuf Creek, its outlet to the south. It is a naturally occurring kettle lake formed by glacial activity during the last Ice Age and is one of the eight glacial lakes in northwestern Pennsylvania. Wetlands line its western shore, while a swampy island sits near its center. An area known as Hidden Lake around the northern inlet is popular for duck hunting. Fishing enthusiasts know the lake for tiger muskellunge, a hybrid of the northern pike and muskellunge. Although tiger muskies are now raised in hatcheries and stocked throughout Pennsylvania waterways, Lake LeBoeuf is one of only two spots where they have been found occurring naturally. Despite this unique claim to fame, Lake LeBoeuf remains little known outside northwestern Pennsylvania, making it an appealing destination for off-the-beaten-path travelers.

Fishing and boating on Lake LeBoeuf

For many, lake fun in Erie County is synonymous with Presque Isle, Pennsylvania’s only seashore. With over 3 million visitors a year, Presque Isle consistently ranks among the most visited state parks in Pennsylvania. Lake LeBoeuf is popular with locals but doesn’t see nearly as many crowds, making it a quieter, more peaceful place to get on the water.

Lake LeBoeuf has a free public boat ramp off Hazel Street along the northern shore. The facilities are minimal, consisting of a parking lot, a portable restroom, and a wooden dock beside the ramp, so you’ll want to bring whatever supplies you need. The lake’s calm water makes it suitable for kayakers and canoeists of all experience levels. Motorized boats, but all boats must operate at slow, no-wake speed, which helps maintain the lake’s calm ambiance while still allowing anglers and other boaters to access the water.

The best time to go boating on Lake LeBoeuf is from late spring through early fall, but it’s a year-round destination for anglers. It’s particularly known for muskellunge, or muskies, and although the catch rates have historically been low, the fish can get quite large, sometimes exceeding 4 feet in length. Since the lake is an open system, fish can swim freely into and out of it. That makes it tricky to stock but also increases the variety, with 17 different species reported by OnWater. Established populations include largemouth bass and panfish, while white perch, brown bullhead, and northern pike are also regularly caught here. You can also go ice fishing in the winter; just make sure to use caution on warmer days and avoid areas where you see water pooling, which is often a sign of thin or soft ice.

Planning your trip to Lake LeBoeuf

While Erie is the closest city to Lake LeBoeuf, the lake is within easy reach of other urban areas. It’s one of the many gorgeous destinations within day trip range of Pittsburgh, located about a two-hour drive north, and is about the same distance east of Cleveland. All three cities have major airports — Erie International Airport (ERI), Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) — and can serve as transportation hubs for visitors from farther away.

The closest town is the quaint borough of Waterford, which is directly north of the lake. While Waterford is home to fewer than 1,500 people, you’ll find a good mix of businesses along High Street. If you need snacks or supplies, there’s a Tops supermarket about half a mile from the boat ramp. For a full meal, you’ll find a cluster of local restaurants a few blocks north, along High Street between First Street and Gazebo Park. This includes The Eagle of Waterford and The Waterford Hotel, two historic 19th-century buildings that serve homestyle American fare and comfort food at budget-friendly prices.

The Waterford Hotel’s name is a bit misleading. It’s a restaurant, not a place to stay. In fact, there are no hotels or motels in Waterford. If you want to stay overnight near Lake LeBoeuf, the Sparrow Pond Family Campground is about a 10-minute drive north and offers cabins for rent along with tent and RV campsites. There are also a couple of hotels about 10 minutes to the southwest in the adorable college town of Edinboro, which has a lake of its own if you want to double up on your adventures on the water.

Erie, Pennsylvania, is a great place to enjoy time on the water.…

[12
136,138,137
post-261887","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-erie","tag-erie","tag-erie-headlines","tag-erie-news
["GET
