Bethlehem Lutheran Church will celebrate its 135th anniversary with an open community celebration from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at the historic church in Nordland Township.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1891 by Swedish immigrants, the congregation has served the area continuously for 135 years. The church maintains a connection with its sister congregation in Kl\u00f6vsj\u00f6, J\u00e4mtland, Sweden, honoring its Swedish roots. Many current members are descendants of families who helped establish the church generations ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re a small rural congregation and not a lot of people are aware that we\u2019re here,\u201d said Council President Sheryl Kleinart. \u201cBut we\u2019ve had continuous service for 135 years and we\u2019re proud to celebrate that history with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 11, 1981. The property also includes a 2.8-acre cemetery adjacent to the church and a parsonage across the road. The Rev. Andrew Stephens became the congregation\u2019s pastor in November.<\/p>\n
The anniversary celebration begins with a 10 a.m. worship service, followed by a church luncheon featuring smoked turkey and ham sandwiches, assorted salads and anniversary cake.<\/p>\n
Guests will also have an opportunity to visit the cemetery, browse historical displays highlighting the church\u2019s past and reconnect with friends and neighbors.<\/p>\n
The afternoon will feature a special music program followed by an ice cream social. Visitors are welcome to attend part or all of the day\u2019s festivities.<\/p>\n
In addition to worship, Bethlehem Lutheran Church remains active through several community outreach ministries. Members organize an annual quilt group that creates handmade quilts for a sale each May while also donating quilts to local hospice patients.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur church has always believed in giving back,\u201d Kleinart said. \u201cWhether it\u2019s making quilts for hospice patients or helping families have a better Christmas, we want to continue serving our neighbors just as this congregation has done for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Church leaders hope the anniversary celebration will not only honor the congregation\u2019s past but also introduce more people to one of Aitkin County\u2019s historic churches.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019d love for people to come, even if it\u2019s just for part of the day,\u201d Kleinart said. The event offers the Aitkin community a chance to learn about the church\u2019s history, enjoy fellowship and celebrate 135 years of God\u2019s blessings.<\/p>\n
