A six-alarm blaze gutted a former furniture factory and forced multiple residents from their homes in Allentown<\/a>, fire officials said.<\/p>\n

City Assistant Fire Chief Jon Steed said flames were reported about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at the former factory in the 300 block of North Front Street. <\/p>\n

Arriving crews with the Allentown Fire Department<\/a> found heavy flames engulfing the expansive vacant commercial structure. Thick black smoke was visible for miles across the Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n

The blaze escalated rapidly to six alarms to bring in more manpower and equipment, drawing mutual aid from several surrounding departments, Steed said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrews mounted an aggressive attack from multiple sides, utilizing ground lines and aerial ladder units while working to prevent spread to adjacent properties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It took crews until early Thursday morning to bring the flames under control, Steed said.<\/p>\n

City Fire Chief Efrain Agosto Jr. said some flames remain at the basement level that firefighters on scene continue to put out with water.<\/p>\n

No civilian injuries were reported. A firefighter suffered an injury and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Steed told lehighvalleylive.com Thursday morning that firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.<\/p>\n

Searing heat and raging flames caused portions of the building to collapse. Flames then reached a set of row homes directly across from the warehouse, Steed said.<\/p>\n

Agosto called the heat \u201cintense,\u201d noting fire officials are still trying to determine how and where the fire started in the building. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe heat itself just basically took over,\u201d Agosto said.<\/p>\n

The amount of smoke in the sky stunned the chief who said this was the largest blaze he\u2019s seen in his tenure of firefighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I walked out of my house, I was actually shocked because I could actually see the stack,\u201d Agosto said. \u201cIt was wide, it was high.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe size, it was pretty massive,\u201d he added about when he arrived at the scene. \u201cThere were flames coming out of every space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several residents \u2014 particularly the 300 block of North Front Street \u2014 were forced to evacuate through rear exits for safety. Others in the area were asked by fire officials to shelter-in-place as crews continued to battle the flames, Steed said.<\/p>\n

Eight homes were damaged with six deemed uninhabitable, the fire chief said. The American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region\u2019s disaster team responded to the fire scene and began helping displaced families with shelter and other needs.<\/p>\n

Cristina Maisel, regional communications manager for the American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region, told lehighvalleylive.com Friday morning a total of 26 people \u2014 including 20 adults and six children \u2014 are displaced and being assisted by the organization.<\/p>\n

A shelter has since opened at Resurrected Life Community Church<\/a>, formerly known as Liberty Bell Church, 620 W. Hamilton St. in the city.<\/p>\n

Allentown police assisted with traffic control and area closures, urging the public to avoid the scene. PPL Electric Utilities responded and de-energized portions of the area, impacting thousands of customers, and UGI shut off gas service to the area. <\/p>\n

WFMZ-TV 69 reported<\/a> the fire resulted in a peak of around 5,000 power outages. PPL Electric Utilities<\/a> on Thursday morning listed 623 outages in Allentown and 239 customers without service in neighboring Bethlehem.<\/p>\n

The former factory building, which was slated for redevelopment by city officials, sustained major damage in the fire. It is expected to be torn down and demolished sometime Thursday, Agosto said.<\/p>\n

As of 8:15 a.m. Thursday, a witness reported multiple homes across the street from the warehouse charred with visible damage. The street is lined with broken glass. Power lines continue to dangle over the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

Some parked vehicles in front of the former warehouse appeared heavily burnt. Smoke could still be seen funneling out of the warehouse as crews continued to contain the aftermath of the flames.<\/p>\n

Additionally, PPL crews remain at the fire scene. Several roads continue to be closed off to traffic. Some residents were sitting outside their homes and continued to be assisted by Red Cross representatives.<\/p>\n

An air quality monitor at Allentown<\/a> showed pollution levels rise into \u201cmoderate\u201d for five hours beginning late Wednesday night but dip back to levels deemed \u201cgood\u201d by 3 a.m. Thursday for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) \u2014 tiny pollution particles that can affect breathing.<\/p>\n

The cause of the blaze remains under active investigation by the Allentown Fire Marshal\u2019s Office, with assistance from other agencies. Fire officials, however, do not believe the blaze is suspicious, Agosto said.<\/p>\n
