DUNMORE, Pa. \u2014 Starting college can bring a mix of excitement and nerves, and student leaders play a key role in helping first-year students<\/a> navigate that transition.\u202f As part of Penn State Scranton\u2019s efforts to welcome the class of 2030, it is introducing its New Student Orientation (NSO) Program<\/a> leaders through a series of Q&As.<\/p>\n

Orientation leader\u202f Stephan French<\/p>\n

Stephan French is a first-year international student majoring in mechanical engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?<\/p>\n

French: I chose Penn State Scranton because of the welcoming environment, smaller class sizes, and the opportunity to experience a diverse community while being part of Penn State.<\/p>\n

Q: What\u2019s one piece of advice you\u2019d give to new students?<\/p>\n

French: Don\u2019t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. College can feel overwhelming at first, but getting involved<\/a> and asking questions really helps.<\/p>\n

Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?<\/p>\n

French: Getting involved helps you make friends, build confidence, and feel more connected to campus. It also makes your college experience more enjoyable and memorable.<\/p>\n

Q: What\u2019s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?<\/p>\n

French: A planner or calendar app is a lifesaver. Managing your time well makes balancing classes, assignments and activities much easier.<\/p>\n

Q: What\u2019s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?<\/p>\n

French: My favorite memory so far has been meeting people from different backgrounds and being part of campus activities that made me feel welcomed as an international student<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?<\/p>\n

French: Being an NSO Leader has helped me grow more confident, improve my communication skills, and connect with new students while helping them feel comfortable starting college.<\/p>\n

Q: What\u2019s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?<\/p>\n

FrenchI wish I knew that it\u2019s normal to feel nervous or unsure in the beginning. Everyone adjusts at their own pace, and it gets easier with time.<\/p>\n
