A Grammy Award winner, Carter was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet from 1963 to 1968 and was named as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 1998. He also holds the Guinness World Record in 2015 as the most recorded jazz bassist, with 2,221 individual recording credits at that time.
