Homebound senior citizens are getting a boost in meals delivered to them through an enhanced Berks Agency on Aging program.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the agency and local officials gathered Monday to celebrate the successful implementation of the enhanced Home-Delivery Meals Program.<\/p>\n

The new version of the program provides homebound seniors with frozen, dietitian-approved meals delivered twice per week. The new format increases the program\u2019s flexibility, improves meal safety and ensures greater service reliability during inclement weather and other unforeseen disruptions.<\/p>\n

The Area Agency on Aging is the primary funder of the program, which also relies on collaboration with Berks Encore, Boyertown Area Multi-Service, the Hispanic Center of Reading and Berks County, and Helping Harvest food bank.<\/p>\n

Those organizations provide free meals to adults ages 60 and over at senior centers throughout the county.<\/p>\n

Berks Encore and Helping Harvest provide meals at six senior centers, while Boyertown Area Multi-Service and the Hispanic Center each operate and serve meals at their respective centers.<\/p>\n

Beyond providing healthy meals, the centers offer recreational activities, educational programs, wellness opportunities and social engagement that help older adults remain active, independent and connected to their communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood nutrition is essential to healthy aging, but so are opportunities to stay connected with others,\u201d Jessica Jones, director of the Berks County Area Agency on Aging, said in a statement about Monday\u2019s celebration \u201cOur meal programs not only ensure older adults have access to nutritious food, they also foster friendships, reduce social isolation and help individuals maintain their independence.<\/p>\n
